I've just found half a dozen handheld reds in my workshop. They expired over twenty years ago, so I don't think I'll rely on them.

I spoke to my Dad about VE day and whether he remembered it. My paternal grandfather was still in Belgium winding things down but he came back a few weeks later sporting his free 'civvy' suit, which my Dad says was issued to everyone being de-mobbed. He smuggled back a Very pistol and then spent a happy evening firing flares over Colinton (an Edinburgh suburb) with his children (my Dad and uncle/aunt) running out and trying to collect the spent flares and their parachutes. Unsurprisingly this jolly caper didn't last long as the polis came knocking on the door and confiscated the pistol! My maternal grandfather handed back his Spitfire keys but from what I can work out he was a spent force. The stress of doing what he did throughout the war knocked him for six and I suspect he had PTSD, for which he (obviously) received no support. He died when I was about 11 and I sadly never got to speak to him about his war - but I think he wouldn't have said anything in any case. He flew observation flights solo over Germany photographing V rocket launching pads and the German railways.

But this is not very boaty, so just out of interest.. all the very OOD red rockets worked safely but with greatly reduced altitude and brightness. Worth keeping on board? Yes ..but only if you have space.

I opened up a 12 year old Seago a few weeks ago. The hand held reds, unknown Chinese make, worked perfectly
