First Boat

Hardy Pilot comes to mind, if someone is happy to sleep in the cockpit but one with much get up and go for £10K may be an issue. Certainly happy in river or sea conditions and far more sea kindly than some of those Bayliners if the weather goes runny on you.
 
my head hurts :-) soooo many options. I'll do what I do at work, make a list of needs and constraints and work through the suggestions until I find the perfect match...

One last question (for now :-) ) is it better to buy now from a price point perspective or wait until the summer months.. I'd imagine the price is lower in the winter generally? secondly, do you expect a number of boats to come on the market at bargain prices in the next 6 months due to the economy situation.. the latter's a toughy to gauge I know but I'm thinking it may be better to hang fire for a few months as I'd probably not use her until the summer anyway.

Our first boat was a Sealine 195. Great family boat with decent cooking, toilet and sleeping facilities for a (small) family of 4.
Very towable. We had many family Med and Adriatic (Yugoslavia in those days) holidays towing it behind a Sierra.
Getting a bit old now so make sure you have a survey but will be in your price range.
Good seakeeping, keeping the family nice and dry as you go.
So impressed with Sealine we bought two more.

Abso bloody lutely buy now. Prices will be way lower than in the spring /. summer and in todays market you should bid hard very hard cos nothing much selling.
 
Another vote for the Fletcher 19GTS - we had the diesel version, and it did everything we asked of it. We were caught out in rough seas and it handled it well considering its a sub 20 ft boat. During the summer, myself, the missus and my 3 teenagers slept on it one night - now that was an adventure!
 
Had a Trophy 2159 ... very roomy ... and would suit the requirements well...

If this one have the door back, then it is even more useful as it is nice and sheltered inside... Small dinette on Port Side (can be made into double bed), and two burner hob... as well as three people can sleep down below. Not many 21 footers who boast this volume of space.

Seem to recall that this has been for sale for a while... so worth a low offer if you are interested...

Got a few pointers for you to look for, so send me a PM if you are going for a viewing.

mine weighed in at 1450kg with half a tank of fuel-tow it with an Alfa 156.
We launch at Bucklers Hard or Christchurch and Cowes, Yarmouth, Lymington, Newtown Creek or Christchurch beaches are all easily doable.
The comment about the 'chop' is also very valid-have had some uncomfortable rides back when the wind has picked up.

nice one, I'll pm you to take you up on that offer if I end up looking at the 2052 again.. I'm currently quite taken by the Fletcher 19gts on paper.

I used to drive a 156 Selespeed a couple of years back and it's enouraging to know it's capable of towing your boat.. my wife has a Peugeot 307 Diesel 2.0 HDI 110 which has a towing capacity slightly higher than the 156 according to these guys

Well don't jump into anything straight away, I'll give the guy on here a nudge to see if he'll put it up for sale. He did offer it too me for just under £11k for a 2001 boat which i think is pretty good, earlier this week.

They are great boats, we had the older 18' version for our first boat, we slept in the cuddy ever other weekend and there was plenty of space and I'm 6'4".

Slight thread drift but what do you think of Bucklers Hard as a launch site? We launch at Crosshouse or Hythe. Tried Calshot but it is very exposed and prone to wash from passing tankers etc.
 
I keep a sailing dinghy there. The launching ramp is OK, but you'll run out of concrete at LWS, so it's best avoided then. Lots of spectators to watch you cock things up, particularly at weekends, and not the cheapest place to launch (£10+ per day, iirc). Tidal currents can be quite strong, particularly on the ebb at Springs. About 45 minutes from Bucklers Hard to the Solent at 5 knots.

Beautiful surroundings (but then I'm biased). /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

tho I think it's cheap (£30 at Hamble point for example)-the cross current makes things interesting when recovering, but apart from that, I like the place-I looked at Hythe, but no way to get on the boat after launch (there's a pontoon at BH you can use), and they are a friendly bunch.

same problem at crosshouse with no way to get aboard after launch, and had some 'fun' at Calshot trying to get on the trailer and won't be going back (well, to launch, anyway!) /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
 
Fletcher 19 is a good boat, they handle chop well mainly because they are heavily built and have a deep 'V' hull.Cuddy is useable and they have a porta potti, small sink, water system and cooker.
You can overnight fairly comfortably with 2 adults and 1 small child, but your children would be too big.

They weigh a lot more than an equivalent US boat, a 19GTS with a 3 litre will be about 1600kg and a 4.3 litre nearer 2000kg. However with carefull packing an outboard version would be just within your towing limits. Lots of choice around, you should get a 2001-2003 with a decent engine and trailer easily within your 10k budget. (Avoid any with less than 90hp, they arnt much fun with a family of 4 on them)


Others to consider as mentioned Bayliner 2052 or 1950, Maxum 19SC, Sealine 190 (Less deck space but bigger cuddy), Chapperal 205, Glastron 209, Doral 190 (very Rare). They will all be very close to your towing limit, and you will need a decent slipway to launch and recover using 2 wheel drive.
 
At present, without viewing one, I've got my eyes fairly firmly set on the Fletcher 19 GTS... Seems to tick most of the boxes if I'm fortunate, I think I can get a year 2000+ one for around £10k... plenty of time to find one too.. I'll be in Majorca over Christmas and new year so I'm hoping there'll be a few on the island that I can have a good look at.

still very much open to having my eyes fiveted if you think there's something better to go after
