Filler on keels

My Centaur's cast iron keels have a very uneven surface, and need sandblasting, but I'm keen to get back in the water! Would car body filler provide a temporary and cheap way of achieving a smooth surface until I get to do the job properly next winter?

Can't comment on car body filler ! However, if you need a quick solution and don't want to go along the line of getting a 'proper' smooth finish using other products, I could recommend using something like International's Watertite for filling small areas on the keel - but be sure to follow instructions re priming etc.

Regards,

Eric.

I have used car body filler for filling and faring the keel on my racing boat for years. It's cheap it sticks like messy stuff to a blanket and it sands easily.
It's based on polyester resins so it isn't really suitable for permanent immersion so give it a couple of coats of epoxy paint to seal it.

I use plastic metal on mine covered by hammerite. I gave it a good going over about three years ago with a wire brush and finished with three coats of hammerite with antifoul on top. Since then, I have only had to patch small areas. Suspect I will have to repeat the large job in about 3 - 4 years.
