The owner of the two catamaran's to be used sold/moved them to Russia. I understand Severnlink are still intending to operate a service when they find a new backer/suitable ships.

No doubt any such fast ferry would see a lot of cancellations on that route unless it was one of the larger incats!

Supprised they can't get grants.

They get a few small grants but in the current climate not enough to bail her out. Sad when you see stuffed and mounted ships like the Cutty Sark having over £50 million ploughed into them.

Paddle Steamer Waverley is a piece of living maritime history giving many the only opportunity to sail the coastline yet on Sunday evening it could very well be the final time her master rings down 'finished with engines'. A very sad day if that is the case . .

Why should we subsidise ( ie give grants to) a ferry? If it doesnt pay on its own then its not sufficiently wanted.

Was the reference to grants not aimed at PS Waverley not the proposed ferry?

There is no demand for a Ferry, the Severn Bridge does that job.

PS Waverley, in my view deserves a grant to keep sailing - she is not commercially viable in her own right but is an historic ship providing her passengers with a living museum experiance. She offers an experiance no other ship can, most members here are boat owners, without the PS Waverley and her fleetmate Balmoral there are few opportunities for public to see our wonderful coastline.

A big vote from me for the Balmoral and the Waverly, if ever was a lottery grant deserved?
Assuming there is some money left from all the their worthwhile causes.

Why should museums, floating or otherwise, be subsidised? Wouldnt we be better off subsidisng modern start up industries that might re-build our economy and provide jobs with a future rather than being sentimental about the past?

Cant resist joining in the debate ..

Why should anything be subsidised? Because for centuries, subsidies have always been required to keep things like opera companies, or theatres, or galleries, or even specialized schools afloat. Because they enrich the cultural life of our country. If we had never subsidised anything, we would have no national gallery, no natural history museum, no national opera, etc etc.

You could just decide that everything should operate purely on commercial terms. But our country would be immeasurably poorer for it. Fact is its been an accepted part of modern civilizations since the renaissance, that unless the powers that be subsidize the arty sides of our culture, they disappear.
