I'm currently bringing a 55yr old wooden ketch back to England. She's a great old boat but has had a sorry recent history that doesn't need to be gone into. Anyway, she was adrift near the shelf in Biscay for 8 days after the crew were taken off. I can only imagine what she suffered out there and since I joined her in Lorient it's been a predictably constant job to repair/adjust/replace various parts of her.
Anyway, I've just repaired the most important part - the Webasto. No idea when it was last running but it'll be several years minimum. Lots of corroded wires and dodgy chocolate block connectors but the poor boat (and us) are cold and very damp. I established a good feed and checked the fuel, cleaned various bits and presto - after lots of odd noises, even stranger smells, some smoke and a very cloudy exhaust, it's fired-up and is running. I'm VERY happy.
In direct contrast, the Chinaspacher on my own boat has gone belly-up after only two years.
