Fancy becoming a boatbuilder?

HaHa I like the way the article says "rescued by the German Hanse group" they were hardly rescued not a job saved in the uk & no manufacturing base here

shouldn't it read "before the moulds were snapped up for a rock bottom price" & shipped abroad

only thing British about them now is the name

Well now you can buy the Sealine factory and its premises, in part or whole...

A somewhat misleading article by MBM as they are implying you could buy the premises for £580,000. This is actually only the rateable value of the site which at 259,000 sq.ft. on over 11 acres is likely to be worth more in the region of £10-12 million, though possibly less with the potential break-up it might require for it to attract quick interest, bearing in mind that its current owners will be paying out around £250,000 a year in rates alone with that RV.

It's an interesting investment. But it has to flatten for resi to do those numbers and there are infrastructure issues which will make resi expensive: lots of bits of water to bridge to get enough access for the vehicles which would be generated plus there are zoning issues with getting resi in the first place.

Otherwise, it's a Morrisons etc - but I think all the relevant players have already looked and turned it down.

Or an opportunity for someone to start a new manuufacturing plant...

No, really, that last one's just too fanciful.

Tata should buy it and build another factory. RR's and Discos have a 6month++ waitlist. I ordered a Disco4 for my father by email with no money paid and then ages later the salesman rang me and said "your car is here". It had been so long I didn't know what he was on about, long since forgotten, and told him he had the wrong number :)

JLR is building a new engine factory at Wolverhampton. I dont think they will be building another final assembly plant in the UK in the near term, as a lot of investment is going into the Chinese JV. Not so long ago, the plan was to shut either Solihull or Castle Bromwich plants, so to keep them both open was quite a relief at the time.
Apparently the Hanse plant is full of "Brummies" commissioning the moulds and building new boats in Germany, so there are still some UK jobs involved, and I guess several of the UK suppliers will be maintained, so not all bad news.

I do know someone who looked at this site but it didn't work for them.

Best option will be a supplier to JLR/Toyota/Honda etc, if you can buy the site with some reasonable regional grant aid as well.

I did not open the details but if sites 1,2 and 3 are for sale for a total of £580k it does not seem like a lot of money.

I think you need a lot bigger site to build cars.

I have never understood other then cheaper land why one would want to build boats in the UK as far from the sea as possible as Sealine and Fairline did/do. the Princess or Sunseeker model next to the water work better for me.
