Re: Challenge Business reply

Many thanks for paying us the compliment Challenge.. and Lucy too! Look forward to hearing from the horses mouth .. It was a real fun programme, well done to all concerned (re previous posts about it being a dumming down of Sail Racing.. we all have to start somewhere and as far as Joe Blogs who's only experience of the sea is similar to Lucy's .. a cross channel ferry.. a great intro to sail racing).

Re: Challenge Business reply

I'm assuming that the rules were the same for all the yachts, so if they did and they used them then fine, don't forget some skippers won't listen so that then gives them a disadvantage - all the same it was the winning that counted.

And I thought clean air was when you where the first to use the heads, and dirty air when you where the second.

You live and learn.

Re: Challenge Business reply

Yes.. most "Round the Cans" crews have a Tactician / Navigator who will calculate which tack is the lifting tack etc .. also of course tidal / current effects .. However on off-shore races where distances and times are longer and the times are in hours / days rather than seconds and minutes this role is still the realm of the Skipper...

This is how I understand it.. not from personal experience..

the last time I raced was in a dinghy and I was effectively disqualified for doing something someone else didn't like.. think it was a protest.. ever since my dilinquent youth I have had little time for the rules of racing .. either you can sail a boat well or you can't..

Re: Challenge Business reply

I'd love to know whether Lucy intends to go on sailing. I thought she had the guts so that with the experience she could be a really good skipper. Or would she be content in future to remain one of the crew?

Re: Challenge Business reply

Good afternoon from Challenge Business and thanks for your replies! Right, I have Lucy sat next to me so can answer your questions. She will only be on line for 1/4 hour as she has a TV appearance to make but then will jump on line later today (15.30ish).

Over to Lucy!

Cheers,

Rachel

Hello everybody just sat here with Rachel looking at the amazing responses and am totally bowled over and feeling like a bit of a superstar! I'm so pleased that so many people watched it and enjoyed it, seeing that it was such a stressful month that I'm seriously considering having botox injections in my forehead due to my deeply furrowed brow through most of the filming!

Its been quite funny to see the disputes its caused between sailors on line about the famous early tack. I was as shocked as everyone else to win the race but I can give you my assurance that all the skippers are very competitive and although they liked me (well at least seemed to!) promised me there was no way they were going to do me any favours (even though I asked them to!!). In one month I don't think anyone would be that tactical and so it was a gamble, was very lucky and I just couldn't believe it worked!

At the end of the day if I'd come last it would have made very funny viewing so I didn't have a lot of lose. I just wanted to get through the race in one piece and I would have been perfectly happy with that. Obviously it was a major result and I was ecstatic!

I have my TV interview now but I'll jump back on line in a bit!

Thanks for all the messages of congratulations, I feel on top of the world!

Bye!

Lucy

Re: Lovely Lucy

Thanks Rachel/Lucy, I specialise in Botox injections and they are free of charge, and I have a nice new boat you can come and sail in at any time.

Be interested to learn;

What sailing offers have come your way since th eprogramme and what sailing plans you have for the future if any.

Were there any funny/interesting moments that were edited out.

How did you feel when Emma & Tracey went away, was it pre-planned or did they just b****r off!

Did you pull?

David

Re: Lovely Lucy

Well done david_e, don't beat around the bush, I'm sure the offer of free botox and a ride on your nice new boat will work wonders!

After trying to break down the class barriers, you've put a sexist one up...ho hum

Well done Lucy, you made faking it one of the better programs on TV, may be more ppl will take up your example and get on the water.

So have you been sailing since?
Would you want to go again?
Has your work improved since being on TV?
Are you still with the ferry company?
What did you find most daunting about the challenge?
Would you do it again, knowing what you know now it's appeared on TV?

Re: Lovely Lucy

I was just wondering,
If Lucy was a short, fat, hairy arsed bloke (much like myself! : ) Would the programe would have caused as much fuss as a posting about flag etiquette??

I know you wouldn't be offering ME free botox on yer new boat! ; )

Well done, Lucy. When you get back online, start a new thread so everyone will be more likely to participate.

Lucy back on line

Dear David,

Free boat and botox sound great!

In serious answer to your question, the bills are still coming in so at present I'm still "skivvying" on the ferries & working in the yacht club! When the weather improves I'm going to have another bash at the dinghies but it'll have me, 2 crew a case of beer in the back & no bloody film crew breathing down my neck!!

As a result of the show I've already had a couple of offers! I've been invited to be the guest speaker at the Naval College in Dartmouth in front of a hundred men so people obviously have a lot faith in my new found confidence. There will also be some publicity work I'll be doing at the Boat Show in January. I'm still in close contact with Challenge Business and when the weather gets a bit warmer I'll be out sailing with them and seeing how it goes. Why, are you going to offer me a job as a hostess on your superyacht?!!!

Memorable moments:

How dreadful I felt when I didn't think that I was ever going to be able to sail a dinghy properly. I remember saying to my video diary that my Mum had phoned me and said don't worry if you're crap darling you could do for sailing what Eddie the Eagle did for ski jumping! But they missed that out!

I also climbed up a 95 ft mast, went to a hynotherapist, a pilates lesson to help my back strength and balance and also to Inspiring Performance which aimed to help me with confidence like the theatre bloke! They didn't use any of that either!

I spent more time with Emma than was portrayed on the telly. It was just unfortunate for me that she was at a very important stage of her career (just about to embark on the Around Alone) but we got on really well and got drunk together a number of times! She was great fun!

Overall it was an amazing experience and I can see myself remaining within the industry preferably somewhere warm and DRY, not necessarily as a race skipper - I'll have to wait and see!

Re: Tacking away

Quite correct Ken,

She was close enough to the train of boats ahead to be being backed off quite significantly by the wash from their mainsails.

The remarkable thing is that the other boats in the train immediately beneath her didn't tack to clear immediately as well!
