Exterior Yacht Lighting

I would like to improve exterior lighting on my 35 yacht for next season.

At present I only have a foredeck flood which leaves the aft end of the boat completely unlit.

The mast is out at the moment and I am considering fitting say 3 LED lights to the underside of the boom and or the spreaders and wired into the deck flood. By using LED's I hope I could use all existing feed cables and breaker etc

2 questions

1 would this work?
2 any idea of anyone who specialises in this type of lighting as I don't want to pay super-yacht money and would probably do the install myself.

Have you got a supply cable going to your boom?

Presumably you wouldn't want to drill into your boom ?

There are lots of lights on the market but I think you need to decide where they will go first.

Have you considered mounting them around the cockpit facing inwards, so you have a lit cockpit ?

Slight OFT but I have just fitted a boaters LEDs in his cockpit and he wanted to use multicoloured ones controlled by a remote control, for mood lighting which was quite weird..

Thanks for this. No I don't have a supply cable but thought if I used a slim line led fitting similar to the one below I could feed the cable inside the boom with only a need for screw holes and cable holes.

Well I guess you could.
Personally I'd go for the lozenge shaped ones which will look neater.

The problem is that when you are sailing, they only light up the sea.

Why would anyone want to have lights shining in their eyes when sailing at night? Total darkness when sailing at night is esential for retaining your night vision.

If deckwork is needed (most people reef down at night so that they DON'T need to do any deckwork) just use a single led head torch from the poundshop or similar.

Deck lghting is for marina & party use only I would guess. I don't know as I have no need of it.

Lighting up the boat at anchor can be a good safety feature and lights in the cockpit are useful.
Bebi make a range of very reliable waterproof reasonably priced LEDs that work well.

Having fitted boom lights about a year ago I can say they are extremely useful.
Once you've fitted them you realize just how useful they are.
I have posted the below images before but repeated here for completeness.
The lights are not used whilst sailing.
The power is fed up through the deck and inside the mast.
It comes out just below the goose-neck fitting and is fed down the boom in a conduit so ropes within the boom don't pull on it. You need to fit a plug/socket in the wire near the boom so the boom can be removed from the mast without added complications.

I've just bought a 10W "fishing boat" light from ebay for £13.

Excellent light; waterproof and with a good adaptable bracket. I doubt any small LED strips will provide enough power to illuminate the deck from spreader level.

External/cockpit lights

As you can see from the various links that there are all sorts of light fittings available. I love the cheap Chinese LED lights in various forms but especially the strips of LED. These could be stuck under the boom to give good no shadow light. Many colours and even varying colours are available.
Your only difficulty is in getting wiring to the lights.
