Expensive watches on boats.

There is no stock in virtually all Rolex outlets and it's a common enough question in many outlets of "desirable" items. Go into a Ferrari showroom and say I will have that one, here's a suitcase of cash and see where it gets you, the same would be true of many similar items.
 
Then it would seem that the shop doesn’t need to be there since all of the information is easily found online. Seems the shop just slows down the process to me, although I can well imagine some folk like to have a person there to make them feel special.

The Tudor Black Bay watch I posted has an MT5602, which is in-house.
Original post updated to be clearer.
As I understand it, it's still a mix of ETA / Sellita / Valjoux / in-house, but they are shifting in the direction of having newer models using in-house movements.
I could be wrong.

Tudor is a good choice if you want a quality mechanical watch at a not-crazy price.

Looking to make this thread even longer, I was looking at digital watches on Black Friday driven by my daughters comments about number of footsteps while we were out walking. I quickly woke up, I rarely wear a watch because I do not need a constant reminder of how fast my time is running out :oops:

Aye. Really tempted by Black Bay 58 - my birth year.
 
This works for me because it’s reasonably light (titanium case), not too chunky, very easy to read the time day or night, and keeps going for 5 days after you stop wearing it.

Update on my much earlier post ....

I have Tissot ... Rolex ... Seiko ... Citizen watches amongst many others in the drawer ...

Out of all those - the Seiko Sportsmatic Limited Edition given me by my Father when I was 10yrs old has the greatest sentiment for me - but after 59yrs its time keeping can change depending on temperature ..
The Rolex is a piece of crap - had a few beers and bought it ... the problem is the hands / numbers and face are all gold ! So half the time - I can't read the darned thing !! It will go to one of my 'Boys' when I'm gone.
The Tissot is a good watch but its all scratched up after years of abuse ...

Anyway - the update is about the 'budget' watch I mentioned earlier post ... I was looking for a Divers watch to replace the Tissot and I found an article about Bill Gates and his use of a certain watch. Intrigued - I looked into it further and true enough - its not just advertising spoof - he really does wear and use such a watch ... despite his wealth.
The Casio WR Divers watch ...

I bought and I can honestly say that it has proven to be accurate .. easily read ... even with my eyes - I can actually read the date window !

I no longer wish to waste money on fancy named watches ... (I did want a Tag Huer - but no longer !).
 
It amuses me that they’re still calling them divers watches. Divers haven’t used watches for 20 years! I think I got my Suunto Stinger in 1999 and even then most of us were moving to computers.

Why wouldn't that be true?

It's a common fallacy amongst the aspirational that the more money you have the more stuff you must acquire to show it off with, but the reality is the genuinely wealthy follow a more discrete path which is signposted that money shouts but wealth quietly whispers.

Somebody truly comfortable in their own skin has nothing to prove and no need to impress and therefore doesn't need an expensive watch or car or phone for others to admire and nor would they wish to associate with those who consider such displays of wealth essential or even desirable.

I believe Bill Gates drives a very modest second hand car too...

Agreed ... I grew up in a 'privileged' family and environment ... knew many famous people ....

Gates house - maybe he's moved since I saw the photo's ... but it has waterfront .. you'd think it would be golden sands / boat docks etc ... NO .. its a narrow stony strip !!

Bill Gates has a car collection that includes a very expensive Porsche 959.
But Steve Ballmer (former CEO of Microsoft) drives basic Fords.
And Ingvar Kamprad (Ikea) drove an elderly Volvo 240.

A work associate collects Rolex watches, has done for decades and he stated the same. If you are known to them, requests are made, and you get priority on models when released. Apparently details of collections are recorded and it all forms part of the history and buying, selling experience. I don’t get it, but it’s his thing and he enjoys it as a hobby. While it is not a closed shop, there is defo an inside line on when stock will become available and a pecking order, as I understand it.

I love the fact that IWC who made watches exclusively for the Bosch during WW2 have a watch called the Spitfire. Suffice to say that although they are just up the road from me and give discounts at their factory, I wear a Breitling Aerospace.

They switched sides in 1948 and made watches for the RAF!
I guess the Messerschmidt edition would not have sold quite as well 😂

The IWC military watch is lush but fails my first test: does it have a protected crown? I’m a relatively active person and crowns snag and disappear if not protected, especially on a boat.
