I really don't care about what others think about expensive/cheap watches, but it gives me a buzz to wear a miniature mechanical thing that also tells the time.

I have an IWC MkXV pilots watch from 2001 that got worn for all sorts of inappropriate activities including boating.
I've had it sent off to be serviced / case polished and might try and take a bit more care of it next time around.
I have another IWC that I'm too scared to wear apart from sitting on the sofa.
Both these are listed individually on the house insurance policy.

And a Seiko Solar watch that I won't mind getting knocked about or splashed, which might become my default boating watch:

Solar is amazing beater watch, been using it for years before getting my Citizen Promaster Diver!

If you do end up going for the Omega Speedmaster, you might want to look into whether your insurance covers it on the boat. From what I’ve heard, watches can sometimes be included under an All Risks extension on your home insurance, but specifics vary. If you decide to take the plunge, sites like https://chronoexpert.co.uk/ might have some solid recommendations for that.

I have had nice watches in the past nothing like a Rolex or anything like that but have found with me its the straps that give out so I have given up on them and have gone for a very cheap £14 Casio waterproof plastic job which has given stunning service for the last 2 years shows me date time and moon phase, there thats jinxed it now... If i want to go posh I will drag my grandfathers solid gold pocket watch on a chain out of the safe.

Anything I take on a boat I have to feel I am prepared to loose over board or get wrecked or there is a good risk of

As I posted before ... had a brilliant Casio Regatta watch ... had the race start timers etc. But as many found out - Casio could not give it a decent strap / pins ... and I know from reading online - that mine was only one of many that ended up 'swimming' .... You can find 2nd hand examples online - but silly prices !!

I have a Rolex ... must have been drunk when I bought it ... I cannot read the damn thing ... hands gold on a gold dial ...

I have a Tissot Divers ... excellent watch but after about 15yrs has finally given up ...

I have a whole boxful of watches incl a rare Seiko Sportsmatic limited cedition my Father gave me when I was 10yrs old ... still works but needs calibrating too often.
My Seiko 5 - must be near all ships people have had a Seiko 5 at sometime in their life !! That was stolen ...

That box has just from memory so sure some are forgotten ...

Seiko Sportsmatic
Rolex Oyster Gold
Pulsar dual digital / analogue
Tissot Divers
Casio Digital
Casio digital with calculator
G-Shock
Ladies Swatch - wife hated it
Cannot remember the Brand - but they produced an exclusive Man + Woman set in black ceramics ... wife was allergic to it ...

Can't remember rest !!

Today I wear a Casio WR MDV 107 .... Bill Gates is reported as wears same !! It does all it is designed for ... water resistant to 20bar / 200m .... keeps very good time ...

If you want the watch, and can afford it, then buy it. Same goes for anything else, boat, porsche etc.

Don't seek approval from others, do what you feel is right for you, I buy toys - drones, cameras, lenses, bikes, because they are hobbies I enjoy - I also like watches and have about 11 which I have collected over the years .... no Rolex, Breitling, Omega or anything like that ... this is my current favourite ...

It looks amazing in sunlight, and the movement if fascinating to watch ... and it confuses the hell out of people who take an interest in it.

The chart plotter, right in front of your face, shows the time. I have not worn a watch in 40 years, since my first real job that included lab work and by implication, frequent hand washing. A useless nuisance and a pointless anachronism.

Buy the guitar. It will be more fun. Or the rigging if you are practical.

[I guess I was blunt ! It's just in fun.]

I already have a guitar.
But I clearly need lessons, according to everyone I try playing to.

I think what I want is an IWC Aquatimer, used - they depreciate nicely.

I don't generally ware a watch on my boat but I do have a number of motorcycle LED clocks on board that are keep the time from the battery when 12Vdc is turned off, but the display goes out when boat battery 12Vdc is turned off

I gave up wearing a wrist watch when I finished working. I've got a nice Seiko which keeps perfect time and I can change the battery for £4.50 every 5 years or so. A friend inherited a nice watch from his father, it cost him several hundred quid for a new battery as it had to be sent back to the maker or they wouldn't guarantee the waterproofing for DIY.
I don't have any friends who are impressed with expensive possessions.

I tell the seasons by the sun, midsummer sunrise shines straight in through the house door, midwinter sunrise lights the whole wall in our bedroom.
During the day laptop/mobile phone/microwave/car all have accurate enough readouts. On the boat any one of the GPS linked displays is even more accurate.
The big plus is that I have never had someone use a sharp knife to persuade me to donate an ostentatious wrist ornament to their cause, but then I don't skipper a foiling boat either..

Whilst in the UK recently my ancient Omega decided to stop so I took it into an Omega / Rolex / Brietling jewellers for a new battery. £40. I put it on my wrist and when I took it off the back fell off. I took it back a couple of days latter and they couldn't get the back to seat. When I returned to France I took it into the Rolex agents in Grenoble who found that the seal had been damaged, they put a new seal in and seated the back correctly for no charge.

I learned my lesson in Naples 2 years ago so am a bit more wary of where and when I wear an expensive watch now, hence the reason I have just today bought yet another watch but it was only €335 and quite nice with a buckle on the strap.

Here it is

Seagull 1963 - 40mm White Panda Sapphire Edition

Aren’t we free to make our own lifestyle choices or must they be subject to other people’s judgement?

Isn't that why we go sailing to get way from those who insist on telling those free what to do.

If I wished to be told what to di I would go live in Russa or China

It can also be a bit closer to home. 13th Commandment "thou must buy an electric car" ;)

If I had an electric car I would not be able to get to my boat as its 800 Km away and the battery would run out before I get there.

If I recharged it would take days to get there
