Engine Oil

Tesco in Bangor has a 15/40 CF4 mineral oil on sale at 5 pounds per 2 litres at the moment which I thought was a good buy. I don't know if it's available anywhere else but would be surprised if it's just this one. Two of those does my Perkins Perama nicely.

Anyone used Exol Victory 15W40 CD/SF? Here at £34 for 2x4.5l (no connection etc.): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VICTORY-1...568?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43b1c8d808

Also here at £17.25 for 5l: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXOL-VICT...TRE-M016-/290875998316?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

Both prices include delivery.

That's what I've just bought 18l of for about £50, eBay. Enough for six oil changes with plenty left over. I'll tell you in a decade or so whether it was a good idea...

Ah - just checked your previous post, which didn't mention the make AFAICS. I could find only smaller quantities - do you have a link if you don't mind sharing it?

Perhaps some CD oil would be a good group purchase along the French lines suggested by Sybarite? Somebody like Morris Oils might well be happy to mix up a few thousand litres ...

No need to search France, these guys are in the UK:

Found after a little search based on the post by Hydrozoan.

I believe JD was referring to imitating the French practice of group purchasing described by Sybarite in another thread, rather than sourcing from France. Yes, I too found the Exol site but they seemed AFAICS only to supply wholesale and the only small volume suppliers seemed to be those two on ebay - unless kelpie comes back with another supplying larger volumes.

Hi, my manual says Choose a lube oil with a rating higher than SAE class CC.

Anyone got a link to the various ratings? I've no idea whats lower or higher than CC !

Many thanks,
Chris

(Also , its a Yanmar 2gm20c if anyone can advise a specific oil).

Read Vics posts and his links. Oils have progressed for modern engines They are now up to CI spec!

But modern oils can damage an older engine that only requires API CD - see Vics website and the paricular Problems that bosun Higgins experience for fuller info.

I was refering to my own practice of scouring the shelves of M Bricolage when in France!

In Turkey I find a fairly limited choice of diesel oils, with Shell and BP products most easily available. For my Yanmar, which is an 88 bhp turbocharged engine in the 4JH range I am using Shell Rimula R4, specification here http://www.epc.shell.com/docs/GPCDOC_GTDS_Shell_Rimula_R4_15W-40_(CI-4)_(en)_TDS_v1.pdf
It does not specifically say that it is mineral oil but as it does not claim to be synthetic or semi synthetic I presume that it is. After several years use of R4, and using Rimula R3 (no longer stocked locally) before that I have had no problems with an engine that is now heading for 5,000 hours.

Excellent stuff for your engine IMO. I have seen some grades of API CI that had a slightly lower TBN, 8 I think, but with a quality oil like Rimula this is unlikely to be a problem.
