End of KHM Voluntary Patrol

The one time I really wanted them - engine breakdown by No 4 buoy in F6-7, they weren't there but, when they were, which was most of the time at weekends, I reckon they did a pretty good job of keeping errant WAFIs and DAFIs out from under the ferries and generally being helpful.

Agree that they did a good job of keeping an eye on the small boat channel, nit an appropriate job for the MOD police who should concentrate on security, risk of a free for all.

Didn't I see a rib patroling marked 'Harbour Master' last weekend? The harbour patrol was in location in the entrance but a large rib was zooming about looking at boats in the main channel inside the harbour.

Sorry to say I think they were well meaning, over zealous, do gooders doing a non job. There you go, I have said it.

I would be surprised if their members pop up soon enough 'encouraging' boaters to follow Natural England's restrictions/wishes/edicts around the coast not that far away.

There harbour patrol launch was moored up at Haslar last time I looked-I guess there isn’t any government cash left to pay for the fuel as I had thought all the crew were ex navy CPO types based on what I heard from them when they welcome yachts to Pompey harbour.

Getting pushed into the path of outgoing ships by the drive on the left crowd is starting to get tedious.

I’m starting to rethink my indifference to thier departure.
If they're more than 50m from the shore then they're in the main channel so I pass them green to green.

are you suggesting some don't follow the small boat channel?

Yesterday lunchtime a Dutch flagged boat motored by the Southsea shore and into the harbour on the Eastern side of the entrance and continued along that side until it crossed to the ‘correct’ side by Gosport Marina, was a bit surprised it wasn’t intercepted by one of the KHM boats.

The more general issue is that a significant minority follow the SBC but ‘drive’ on the left so are out towards the centre of the entrance rather than along the piles by Fort Blockhouse

Years ago you used to be allowed to enter Portsmouth Harbour on the East side.

And many, when leaving on the flood, get caught out by the strong cross-tide at the entrance and swept into the path of inbound boats.

I’d forgotten about that (I have recently avoided the Saturday morning rush by heading off on Friday evenings), it’s often pretty obvious which boat’s helm will be taken by surprise by the cross current

How many incidents have there been since it stopped? I understand being annoyed that not everyone follows the rules, but I'm guessing incidents are somewhere in the region of zero if we discount genuine issues such as engine failure (which the patrol didn’t assist with anyway, trust me!)
