Very interesting video.
Important to watch until the end.
That aspect does seem nuts. Why software cannot be installed at worst case by a cable from a laptop IIt's the having to send the motor back to California for reprogramming that stuck me as mad as a mad thing.
This whole sector is just getting so complicated and stupid it defeats the objectives.
Imagine the carbon footprint of that motor, and it was bought and fitted to help save the planet!!
Absolutely bonkers.
The moment anyone introduces "carbon footprint" or "save the planet" to a hobby I switch off. If you really believe in that cause your hobby should be gardening. It's the having to send the motor back to California for reprogramming that struck me as mad as a mad thing.

If traveling by air, the return trip from the UK to California would produce about 100kg of CO2e. Considerably less if other forms of transport were used. I'm assuming the motor weighs about 4kg, similar to this one: 15 KW ELECTRIC MOTOR - MGM COMPROImagine the carbon footprint of that motor
Which is about 97kg more than having a guy turn up in his Tesla and plug in his laptop. Not to mention the time factor. If traveling by air, the return trip from the UK to California would produce about 100kg of CO2e. Considerably less if other forms of transport were used. To put that in context, that's about the same as burning 40l of diesel.
I'm not defending the decision to ship the motor back to California, just answering the question. It's always helpful to have numbers.Which is about 97kg more than having a guy turn up in his Tesla and plug in his laptop. Not to mention the time factor.
ChatGPT can be amazing, but yeah, it's not quite ready to take over the planet. On the other hand, how much worse could it be?He said little of nothing about saving the planet but was fed up with the smell of a diesel engine and said the compromise and performance suited him, which I think is fair enough.
The battery weight is greatly offset by not having an engine or fuel onboard. The fuel weight saving was not mentioned so I thought I would check it out. T'interweb came up with this AI generated gem:
"12 gallons of diesel weighs approximately 875–2,100 pounds, depending on the size of the fuel tank."
So much for Artificial Intelligence taking over the planet.
.
But it shouldn't be that complex in the beginning, make the thing repairable wherever it may end up around the globe. If traveling by air, the return trip from the UK to California would produce about 100kg of CO2e. Nurse - he's on the wrong thread, again!!!Wow 15 year old news !
Things have moved on a bit since then.
Well you asked the question, I just answered it. Wasn't passing any comment, although I did expect the carbon footprint to be higher. But it shouldn't be that complex in the beginning, make the thing repairable wherever it may end up around the globe.
Simples!!!
What question did I ask?Well you asked the question, I just answered it. Wasn't passing any comment, although I did expect the carbon footprint to be higher.
As you say it does seem a bit silly to have to ship the whole motor half way round the world to do a software update.
