Elan 42 damaged and some salt water immersion. For sale on Essex Boatyards web site if anyone fancies a project??

Cripes, that's had one heck of an impact. Judging by the rust on the engines they've had a salty bath. An Elan 42 would suit us perfectly, but I don't really fancy this one, even if it were very very very cheap.

"Write off" - crikey. You lot are really spoilt. She's still a lovely boat with a huge potential for a good DIY repair. Going by the pics there is damage to the bow which would entail internal strip out up in the peak plus a certain amount of in-situ mould work outside and re-glassing. I'd certainly take that little chore on if I had the opportunity to own it. As for the engines, "classed as non-runners", presumably they got shut down before sucking in water as there is little evidence of extensive flooding in the interior pics. If she was driven into a collision the usual reaction is go hard astern to avoid a collision and then switch off to assess damage. If she was driven into the engines may not have been running at all in which case cleaning and servicing plus batteries might be all they need. Guess you'd need to know what happened to make a judgement, it just looks as though she was driven into a breakwater at speed going by the additional damage down the stem.

I can comment on this.

Basically brand new. Delivery hours on the clock.

Nobody seriously hurt so You have to see the funny side.

Delivery skipper on route to happy new owner. Good vis around but he needed a better view as he headed towards the break water. Delivery man jumps up off his seat.

oop's it's a hard top. Knocks himself out. Boat motors up the breakwater with a bang. You can see the damage.

Almost a tom and jerry like cartoon.

Agree with you, cliveshep, but it all depends on the price. The grp damage is the least of the concerns IMHO. Refurbing the interior could be problematic if much of the timber work is damaged but it depends on what standard the new owner would want it done to. I think you'd have to buy the boat on the assumption that the engines had to be replaced though
Providing you could buy the boat for a low enough price such that the total spend on boat and repairs didn't exceed 50-70% of the used market value for an undamaged boat, then this could be a good project for somebody. The other possibility would be to truck it to the Elan works in Slovenia for refurbing?

No idea really. £20k each? Maybe less for a sevice exchange

Yup, that's my understnading of what happened too, STT. I've seen the boat close up several times at EBY and it's had a hard prang but could be a good purchase if at the right price. The GRP will fix up fine; I haven't looked at the interior etc

The damage wouldnt put me off, would be a good project and an ideal way to get a jump up the boating ladder. Any idea on ballpark price ? if only I had the money......
