Eberspacher won\'t fire up

My Eberspacher heater won't start as of late. I had a problem with a battery and it wouldn't start - now the battery is fine, but when I try to start it all I see are large puffs of white smoke out of the exhaust (it blows perfect smoke rings), the sound like it is trying to fire, but never quite catching. I also hear a gurgling, liquid sound. Some people have suggested that the heater is flooded. If that is the case, any suggestions on how to fix this? Any other ideas are very much welcome.

Thanks

Thomas

You can download the tech manuals from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.espar.com/htm/tecmans.htm>Here</A>

Sounds very similar to a problem I had. I suspect that the "swirl" segments at the back of the combustion chamber are sooted up. If the fuel-air mixture is not swirling correctly it won't ignite properly. A complete strip-down/rebuild took me two hours including time to remove and re-install the heater. You need to get two gaskets and I suggest while you're at it a new glow pin and shield for good measure. Replacing the fuel filter in the metering pump is also a good idea. The unit may now be "locked out" and need a reset at an Eber dealer (unless you've got the very latest timer/modulator which has a diagnostic code reader built in.

The downloadable manual is very clear and the job is very easy. Good luck!

Re: Eberspacher won\'t fire up

I have had this problem several times with two different causes.
1. lots of white smoke, crackling and gurgling. Water in the diesel!
Check for crap in the tank and check any filters, change them.
2. Water down the exhaust. lots of white smoke crackling and gurgling. In the end it should start. If it is a newer heater then the 10 strike rule does not apply aparrantly for these two faults. If it is water down the exhaust then according to Krugger the best way to stop it is build a small tank under the heater (in the exhust) and drain it out as necessary or put a bung in the exhaust when out in heavy weather. The exhaust presure alone is not enough to stop water entering when the heater is in use. They do do a valve system as a mod but Krugger says it does not work after a while and they recomend the tank system to solve the problem.
