Isn't there some sort of small fee for the navigable bit too ?

SWMBO looked ( briefly ) at a house for sale which was right by the restored bit, there were signs of tripper / hire boats of some sorts but I didn't see any.

It would certainly be a good little expedition, starting at Birdham lock then finally emerging, machete held in teeth, to discover Chichester Basin...

Chi Basin to Birdham locks and on round to the Hayling causeway, then across Langstone and see if you can get into Pompey- theCamber? Recreating the express canal boat and powder barges route during the Napoleonics to avoid French privateers. There's a thought, if the Camber end isn't blocked.

Tidewaiter2,

I know the backroads canal route for hopefuly delivering ammunition safe from the marauding French to Portsmouth you refer to; I don't think it ever happened as the canal link from the Guildford arsenal via the Wey & Arun wasn't completed before the French threw in the towel and we decided to have a war with someone else !

John Reger's excellent book ' Chichester Harbour ' mentions this.

However I once met a chap in a Sailfish 18 at Yarmouth who had come all the way by the remaining backwaters - Chichester, under Hayling road bridge, Portsmouth via the Hilsea Lido, then out into the Solent.

He casually mentioned the lift keel had dropped out on the way, and he was heading for Cornwall, complete with family inc young children; when I suggested in my best Dad's Army tone ' I say, do you think that's terribly wise ? ' he became extremely uppity !

Last seen motoring West in a calm...

Back to the canal link, having seen the restorers at work - and had a very pleasant trip from Loxwood - I think it only a matter of time before the link to Chichester is re-established; I photographed the bit by Dunsfold Aerodrome being restored, and there were a few NIMBYs who didn't want peasants in boats going by the bottom of their garden, but I was told by the Wey & Arun canal guy they have the planning permission and funds to go straight past them, with new stretches of canal when necessary !

Oh yes... always wanted to do that on a windsurfer, but back then QHM didn't look favourably upon windsurfers in the harbour....
