As you know I think that the world would be a better place for middle aged blokes if there were more duck punts in it

I managed to slap some paint on the Duck Punt on Thursday and am willing to take it down to HYC for a month and leave it there for people to have a go on it

http://www.haylingyacht.co.uk/

if anyone is considering building one and wants to have a go on it before comitting to the massive cost and effort of (100 and seven days in the shed)

but if there are no takers then I will not bother scratching up the roof of the micra

if anyone wants to keep her down there for a the summer then I am very willing to loan her to a competent keeper

Dylan, your presence at Chichester quickly made me think how unfortunate it is that the Centaur's moderate draft keeps you out of most of the shallow channels, most of the time...

...there'd be lots of fun to be had by you in your punt, while you're based there.

That's a particularly uncharitable post

I don't think Nice dan was being chippy

besides...ducks back... water

however, although I love sailing the punt I only have this one shot at exploring the whole solent in a centaur whereas in future years I can always bring the punt down and do some shallow sailing around the marshy bits

I think I have been misunderstood! Not sure how...maybe read my post again, Simba? :)

Dylan, that second vid certainly shows the punt's compact elegance and go-anywhere versatility. But while steering with a paddle may represent very practical, traditional minimalism, doesn't the surprising efficiency of the hull form deserve a little kick-up rudder, on pintle & gudgeon? Or do the other punts employ such a thing? I didn't notice.

I'm sure there's plenty to explore and discover in the Solent with 3ft draft; but having learned at Chichester in a Topper, I know the vast area of the harbour that I regularly couldn't reach going upwind, with that boat's centreboard lowered. The punt seems to suffer no such limit. :encouragement:

:biggrin-new: That's pretty funny. Poor Dylan, if folk were relieved that he couldn't visit their whereabouts. :highly_amused:

I definitely like the idea of having a go, just can't promise I'll find the time on one of four specific weekends.

Maybe I should just build one instead?

Would that make me middle-aged?

Too right... you'll get film from places you can never reach in the Centaur? Right at the top of the Chichester and Prinstead channels are just two places I can think of... and how about a navigation of one end of the Chichester canal to the sea end.. I'd love to see that... :D

Hey, Dylan, I love the idea of your generous offer! Not sure when, or even if, I'll be able to take you up on it, but I'll certainly bear it in mind when I'm next down that way.

Hmm...I was under the impression a thick horizontal pipe crosses the canal at that point, barely inches above the water. A bit overgrown, too! Hard enough for canoeists.

But, the punt could be hauled out to cross the road.
