Forecasts yesterday were fairly accurate, with a strong wind warning in force. No reason for any yachts to be at sea unless the skippers had done a thorough check of rigging and gear and were experienced enough for the conditions.

Rescues like the ones reported suggest that some people don't take sufficient care over their planning and preparations.

Tough to lose a mast in a blow, but the risks can be managed and - probably - avoided.
