One fine day in the Blackwater Estuary, I had coughed to a stop in my RIB to change fuel tanks over. In the space of about three minutes, I had three raggies alter their course past me, and all asked if I was OK.

Many times have I done the same thing off Cowes, but only another UKSA boat ever came over to me.

There is certainly a difference down south. Maybe it's just because it's busier? I dunno.

Like you I have no understanding of why things are different around here, but it seems they most definately are. Looking forward to meeting up sometime, maybe you could make it to one of the gathering's ?. It's not by invite only, just speak up and join in.

Rimmers salute is fine between sailing boats and slower MOBOs as the passing speed is relatively slow and so there is likely to be enough time from start to finish.

Perhaps for speeding MOBOs / jetskis there needs to be a quicker salute? I was wondering about raising a digit for each engine I think they are using??? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

its one of the joys of boating, meeting others that enjoy your hobby, last bank hol at wells,i met a guy whom i invited onboard for a meal, drink and natter, turned out that he was one of the originals who helped to start the RYA,s courses. That encounter all started from a wave

Quite agree....

Its noticeable that there hasn't been even a hint of malice in this forum.... and long may that be the case...

We've met dozens and dozens of east coast forumites over the last few years, and they've all be extremely friendly, and thoroughly good company!

we purchased our Sabre 27 "Soloist" from Tollesbury marina in 2002/3.having never sailed the East coast before it was a very welcome change from some of the "Snottie Yachties" and power boat owners on the south coast as most on the East coast acknowledged our waves.
Even a fishing boat towing his gear who i gave a wide berth out of consideration came out of his wheelhouse to acknowledge my action.
I know not all are bad but we seem to have more of the car driver s down south for sure, toe down and stop for nothing!
I have waved at some on the south coast as they were blatantly looking straight at us,only to turn their heads as i waved!
We call these the "dont look now marjorie types" afraid they will be rendered useless should we communicate !
I always wondered if my old boat was the only one on the horizon, if their boat was slipping beneath the waves, would they want me to acknowledge there wave then?
Looking forward to sailing the East coast again soon .

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

I have yet to pass a boat over here without exchanging waves!
