They are totally rubbish at keeping stuff dry in the dinghy. What you really, really need is a 'LidliAldi' bright yellow dry bay.

I picked up a yellow dry bag from Range, I had been in Wickes in Glasgow and went next door to look at what wallpaper they had as Wicks were not stocking it in store any more and spotted the dry bag on sale, they had a few different sizes too and all on sale

I find them perfect for a weekender, any random stuff thrown in ,even a duvet and a pillow will fit in with a bungy for the handles( I don't do sleeping bags) and if you go for a dip throw the wet towels in and roll up till home

Mostly I use ...
  • Gill Race dry backpack for my day bag.
  • Tool backpack or electricians bags for small tools.
  • Old school canvas ice bags for part and tools for projects.
  • Dry Gill duffel for wet winter kayak gear and similar. Stuff to keep dry in the summer. Very handy.
  • Sometimes laundry baskets are handy. Or cardboard boxes if I may throw it away.

I find them useless: too wide base surface, too short height, everything I put inside that bag sooner or later fell over, rather sooner.
The only convenient use we found is to move the cat's transport cage, the animal cannot see around it so it remains quieter.

I religiously use 3 or 4 of the ubiquitous IKEA bag to transport items on and off the boat. Am I alone or is this widespread marine practice?

I always have an empty one available in case I get chucked out at short notice, or no notice at all. More dignified than a black bin bag and a lot stronger.

IKEA sell bags which we use for bedding and clothing. Large and have a long zip for easy access.

Gets stuff ashore in the dinghy dry.

£3.50 each and we have four or five. Makes bedding changes simple and trips to the laundrette easy.
