I am looking for insurance for a 32 year old boat and some companies are asking for a survey. The boat is worth 8k .
Does anyone know of an insurance company offing to insure without a survey probably third party only.
Any help appreciate.

I feel your pain. I'm just going through this myself. My boat is probably worth less than yours! The problem I have is that I need an insurer that does single handed insurance and my current insurer has been very good in that aspect but still requires this survey every 10 years. I'll be interested to see if anybody comes up with something.

I have been with Navigators and General for a few years with their Small Craft Insurance, member of the Zurich Group. Based in Brighton.
Boat is a Leisure 23sl valued at £7,500. Approx 35 years old. Swinging mooring April to end of October.
Cost is less than £200 per year which included dingy, some contents, sails, transport, winter storage, etc.
Personally need such cover as a condition of my Yacht Club Membership.
You need to read their Product Information Document, maybe online?
Never been asked for a survey.
First on list of what is not covered: Loss or damage caused by the craft being in an unseaworthy condition.
Tel: 01273 863400.

Why the resistance?

They are taking on the risk, would you buy a 32 year old car without an MOT?

An independant eye over your boat can find things out that you never picked up or confirm that you have done everything you can to keep the boat in tip top condition.

£300 to £400 for an insurance survey every 5 years is no real biggie, is it?

The alternative is third party only insurance, but then you take on the risk of the boat is lost.

Being cynical, an insurance company may think you have something to hide if you don’t want the survey.

FYI not saying that is the case with you.

Yachting 24 don't ask for surveys but only cover boats under 50k and less than 40 years old.
Seem to be cheaper and less restrictive than most on here suffer as well.

I lost faith in Full Cover after a famous company in UK put an adjuster onto my claim and looked for every tiny excuse to get out of it ... even investigated the claim prior to it to use that to try void claim. It ended up as my negotiating direct with the Underwriters themselves as the Broker just refused to communicate after I proved their action was unfounded. The fact they sent in an adjuster without my knowledge ... gained access to the boat ... questioned yard owner who knew nothing about the actual circumstances leading to the damage and wrote that damage was not due to claimed event etc. - despite RNLI records .....
I had to agree to 'Write-off' of the boat ... reduced payout and kept it ... did a deal with yard owner on repairs ... as far as I know she's still sailing on South Coast ...

And people ask why I reduced to 3rd Party only ? I went from 270 quid a year for nothing ... to about 50 quid for what was really needed.

As we offen read , you only know how good an insurance company is when you go to make a claim .
I guess if your boat only worth a few K and you can offer to lost it then just go for a cheap insurance other wise choice one with a good rep.

When I needed to increase cover for the early days of the boat being in Latvia ... I found Mannheimer in Germany offered Insurance cover and premiums that UK never matched in price or service. I couldn't believe it ... and wished I'd known about them before.
As far as I know - Mannheimer do not have a Geographical limitation .. as far as anywhere Europe / UK that I know of ...

And when you choose not to have a survey please remember that it was Navigators & General Insurance that wouldn't accept my claim for sinking after my bilge keel cruiser dried out and split the GRP hull alongside the bilge keel.

They said that it was a design issue and that it was a condition that pre-dated my purchase of the boat, unless I had a survey to prove to the contrary.

A waste of £6000 of my own hard-earned money.

I would not re-insure with them again but have always had a pre-purchase survey of my boats since then.

The 'old' Newton Crum who kept telling everyone how great they were after the Hurricane ..... tried desperately to void my claim years ago ... so much so - I was considering legal action ...
