Does anyone know what the laws are on picking a spot along the river and droping in your own mooring?? and if you did it, how would/could you stop someone else claiming ownership of it. once you leave it a few days.

Don't know the laws on this but suggest that in many cases, the banks down to Mean High Water Line are owned by the riparian owners of the land. In other cases, they can own the river too or to its mid stream point. In other cases the river can be Crown property. Don't take any of this too seriously, as I base it on my vague meories of access to rivers during my goose shooting expeditions of many years ago. There's so much knowledge on this forum that you will get the exact information you need from people before long. Roy

If your talking about the Thames, then you would have to pay a license and survey fee or something. Landing stages etc.. that protude out into the river have to be licensed and rent paid to the EA in proportion to the amount of riverbed they cover, so I guess a mooring would be the same. Never seen one though and almost certainly would be frowned upon I would think.

Depends where you want a mooring, I see you are in Suffolk. As far as I know. on the Orwell you have to get permission from the harbour authority at Ipswich Port, You may get allocated one but it could be anywhere, some a long dinghy row/motor, but it will be cheaper than a marina/boatyard - or possibly go on the waiting list. The same for the Deben(local mooring committee) and probably the Stour as well. Or join a local yacht Club which may have morings available. Half tide moorings much easier than deep water moorings but there has been some vandalism locally near Fox's boatyard.
Regarding the law, all moorings have to be licensed by the relevant authority/committee and a fee charged which I believe goes to the Crown.
