DIY LiFePo4 installation - Don't do what I did (maybe) . . .

Can you point us to the legislation that requires end users, fitting LifePO4 to boats, have to comply with please ?

Whatever the individual insurer wants you to comply to. Presumably at some point it will be ISO 23625:2025 (Although I've only read the informative section)

You said "Legally, they are the same, LiFePO4 are a type of Lithium Ion and until the regulations change to differentiate between different Li-Ion chemistries, insurers will class all Li-Ion chemistries as the same."

If it's legal, there has to be some legislation, where is the link to it please ?

What "regulations" ?

I don’t think it is a “legal” point - it is a technical / scientific point that LiFePO4 are Lithium-ion.
But therefore any insurer conditions (which is what this thread was about) or coded vessels rules that simply refer to “Lithium-ion” include all types.

PS. Did you see and respond to the recent MCA Consultation on new rules for Coded vessels - there was a huge amount of new “guidance” and requirements proposed to be added for Coded vessels, which the RYA raised concerns about. MGN 550 got a mention albeit a bit buried.

I don't think it's a legal point either, or there would have to be legislation in place.

I agree that there is a range of batteries that scientifically are all part of the Lithium-Ion family, but generally, when talking about Lithium-Ion it's with reference to the pre LifePO4 batteries.

Google Search

The insurance industry is all over the place at the moment, without some sort of standard to go one, who knows...............

I'm aware that there are some changes being discussed, but i'm not part of that. As i said earlier, there is nothing in the current MGN280 that mentions Lithium batteries at all.

I fully expect that when something is put in place it will be untenable.

ISO 23625:2025

Assuming it becomes a BSI ISO (and as ISO is an SDO, it would be an international standard)

That's not a "regulation", it may become a standard, maybe.

New build boats have to comply with particular standards. For instance, in the UK and EU new boats have to comply with ISO 13297. Once built there is no requirement for subsequent works to comply with the ISO. The ISO is not a regulation or a legal requirement.
