Got the snooper. But I live 5 minutes from A303, so actually not too bad. Left 19:30 on Friday was in Falmouth for 22:30, left 18:30 on Sunday and home at 21:30. In both directions traffic was OK and cruise control set at 85 on the dual carraiageway sections. Think that Sat am is the big problem time with traffic as it is the usual handover day for holiday accomodation?

I lived in Plymouth for quite a while, and regularly did the trip up to the midlands to see my and SWMBO's folks......

Could do it in 3.5hrs on a good day.... but word of caution, as has been alluded to above..... as soon as temperature goes above 21deg add 2 hrs... if in school holidays add 1hr, and if a Saturday morning/Friday evening coinciding with above, add a further 2 hrs.......

You know when you have trouble ahead when the delightful A38 queue starts at the infamous Telegraph hill..... and the radio is saying queuing to Indian Queens... It has before taken me in excess of 10hrs........not fun!

If I was you, I'd defer a decision until you've made the trip during school holidays, which start in a fortnight....

Non - from Chez JImi a la Chez Ken I'd reckon on c 2 hours so I reckon I've got a 2 hour start plus being local I know the rat runs to circumcise Stonehenge and the Countess roundabout .. worth c 30 mins so I reckon I've cot a 2.5hr start on your 6 hours which makes my 3 hours OK .. Its 190 miles door to door much of which is fast Dual carriageway so 160 miles at 80mph and 30 miles at 30mph = 3 hours. OK with clear roads which there was .. but time could easily be doubled if congestion

If you can maintain 80 on the A303/A30 you haven't yet the man in the hat and the Toyota Yaris who reckons that 55mph in the overtaking lane is quite quick enough for anyone in this day and age young man, and that the light-flashers queuing up behind him are signalling their agreement with his sentiment.

OTOH, if you have met him, and you're still averaging 80, you could soon find some SW magistrate asking for the pleasure of your company at an intimate little gathering of law enforcement agents and their learned friends.
 
Overtaking techniques

Erm the A30/303/39 is actually pretty good when its not full of cars! I know it pretty well cos I used to surf a lot and in my experience the really busy times are fairly predictable .. avoid Saturdays and bank holiday friday/mondays and its usually OK (partic with ratrun knowledge at pinch points).

Used to knowh a trained police pursuit driver who gave me some handy tips to deal with the intrangient outside lane hogger!!

Plus point there is when you get past there's usually about 15 miles of clear road ahead!!

oops ... a VW Polo 1.1lt with 4 blokes + kit was seen with man-in-mitre .. (m)uttered several blessings, i believe, to Truro plods ...
 
Rugby to Plymouth
Early/late season - 3/12 hours plus a comfort break each way, Friday night/ Sunday late afteroon, if madam can't plait them tight enough....
holiday season...plan for 4.5-5 hours each way, based on the last season and a half of keeping the boat there.
 
4 mins from house to car park, a minute to walk to the boat, normally 20 to 30 mins to get out of the marina. Not sure I could live too far from the boat .. mind you, I've been working away from home for months now, so the effect is the same. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

parking Peppermint in Port Canto, Cannes next year. It's the same price in euro's as Shambolic Quay is in pounds. Flying down is cheap and easy as I'm only 30 mins from Luton. Driving back on Saturday I left Cannes at 06-30hr's and I was in my house at 20-30hr's.

I just don't know if I could put up with all that good weather.

I started my cruising career in Falmouth in the 70's. Aylesbury to Mylor used to take about 8 hours on a good day.
 
Chatham to Chichester (about 93 miles) in 90 mins regardless of time of day or day of week. Always seems to be 90 mins each way regardless of how fast or slow I drive. Always seem to be heading aginst the main flow of traffic and have only been cought in long tail backs a handfull of times in the last four years.
