I'm not sure where I read it but I seem to remember that a flux gate compass is affected by a steel hull even more than a magnetic compass, some talk that the it needs to be mounted at least 3 meters up a mast ? I must have got it wrong, but why change the habit of a lifetime ?! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The fluxgate compasses we use, are electronically controlled, you input the earths magnetic field and its strenth and dip angle, it works out the interference and then corrects for it, remembers the steel around it and then gives true readings. as long as it isnt affected by other external forces, like putting a bloody great steel container next to it, it manages fine.
