Planning a day sail tomorrow as part of a regular Club outing. Been looking forward to it for 3 weeks since the last sail - got loads of brownie points for decorating in the meantime.

The forecast is for High pressure and clear skies, so pretty chilly! The problem is that we both seem to be coming down with the the first cold of the winter. There is a lot of it about at present.

So should we be going sailing? My old mum's POV would be to stay at home in the warm. My attitude is that plenty of fresh air will work wonders.

What is the best medical advice?

Sail! If you just have a cold and nothing more serious a good blast of fresh air will do you good. Mind you wrap up warm though and don't forget to have those gloves tied on with string through your coat so you won't lose them.

If you go out sailing you will catch a cold and it will last a week. On the other hand if you go home and cover up and keep warm with lots of hot totties it will only last one week.

A "cold" is a virus, so if you treat it, it will last about 7 days, if you dont treat it, it will last about a week. Treat the symptoms and Go sailing!

Medicine - to be taken on board

One shot of whisky
One teaspoon lemon juice
Two teaspoons honey
1 slice lemon
1 clove
1 builder's teabag
Cup of boling water

Add teabag to water. Leave for one minute. Remove teabag and throw away (the teabag, not the water).

Add remaining ingredients, finishing with lemon slice speared with a clove, and drink.

Repeat frequently until cold gives up and goes off to find someone who doesn't know this recipe.

I admire the sentiment but

why waste time with all those funny ingredients? Enstone's patent cold cure:

Recipe
! bottle whisky

Preparation instructions
Take off top, empty contents into patient, throw bottle away.

For God's sake man, go sailing !

Something which works very well for me, however, is echinacea, a few drops taken in water morn & eventide throughout the winter. It may only be the placebo effect but as I say, it works for me. It's obtainable from most heath food shops, chemists &c. or look up echinacea in Google.

I also find it works very well when taken in combination with Twister_Ken's and Ohdrat's recommendations - though I would probably up the quantities and reduce the intervals myself . . .

Fresh air is good, but when you stop for the night, drown it in alcohol- I'm convinced it's the only thing that makes you feel better and if you're both in a drunken stupor, you won't notice the other one snoring with their blocked nose.

Forget all the vitamin c and zinc stuff- wasre of money IMO.

Alternative

Have a hot bath and then without drying yourself and just covering your modesty go and stand outside until dry.

This way you will get pneumonia. But pneumonia can be cured.
