You sound similar to me in that I object to paying "professionals" to repair things badly when I can do often a better repair at a fraction of the cost except the valuable cost of time. In reality the most precious thing we spend every day is time - its a finate amount we all have yet its one we can't quantify. That is why I said get someone to manage the house and allow 15% for costs including repairs.

Currently doing the our en-suite. Had to replace 2 plasterboard walls as tiler left spacers in tiles thereby relying on only 2-3 mm of waterproof grout! Builder did not use moisture resistant boards and drainage had a 2" backfall on it leaving us often in the perverbial BUT we are only here once and if you really did want to sail away for a while on your gravestone can be written "So good at repairing hot tubs cheaply but it cost him his dream!" Don't get me wrong I have missed a lot of sailing this year for DIY and I am not overjoyed and certainly not in a position to criticise others!

So many talk about sailing away but leave it so long ill health catches up with them. It is not a step to be taken lightly but good luck to those that do!

PS The hot tub may still be there and working when you and I are dead!
