John,

Hope your well....

Just thought i'd let you know that we've made a decision this evening to 'sell up and sail'. Our original plan was to wait until the kids had left home, but we've decided that life's too short, the kids are too precious, and there is WAAY too much to see in a lifetime...

I'm going to keep it quiet for a while until our plans are more developed in case something goes horribly wrong with our sums, but I needed to tell someone, and thought that you of all people would understand both the magnitude of our decision, and the sense of excitement!

We're hoping to perhaps be kicking off sometime around XXXX... depends how quickly we can [...REMOVED...].

Cheers

BRILLIANT NEWS.

NAME REMOVEDl, between now and the day you actually leave, you will suffer the equivalent of Buyer’s Remorse. And every time your make another step towards casting off the lines you’ll ask yourself if you’re doing the right thing. From the day you actually leave, you will regret taking so long to do it.

Bon Voyage and look out for me, I’ll be back out there soon.

I am so proud of you that I am going to post on YBW about your news, but will not name you

Thank you for letting me know.

Cheers

John.

I do love it when I hear about stuff like this.

Mines been put back, I hope to move on late this year, early next and move off as the days get longer.

Part of my problem is what to do with the house, with prices still rising I am scared to get out of the housing ladder. Renting is an option, but we have a hot tub, this worries me as it requires looking after, will people look after it or will I end up with repair bills? It is too difficult to move it.

I also need storage of some kind, I am shocked how expensive depositories are.

Any advice?

Best of luck to whoever it is
Dogwatch , sod the storage problems , I can store half an estate here . Ask Tommyrot . Large barn , loadsaspace

Stingo , come on , just a hint /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Good stuff!

In my case I have no plans to "sell up and sail away" (plenty I still want to do "onshore") but one of the things that was important to me in choosing my current boat was that it IS capable of going anywhere, so that if one day I decided when out sailing round the bay to just keep on going, I could! (Ok, not quite that simple I know, but you get the picture /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Of course their are "better" boats to do the sell up and sail away thing on (mainly another 10 foot would be nice!), but as a couple of her sisterships have circumnavigated I figure she should be ok for me "running away to the med" for a couple of years, if I ever need to................sometimes I figure it is the dreams that are as important as the reality.

/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Fair winds to them........don't look back and head for that horizon.

We have been back "on the beach" for two weeks as we are expecting a second baby in November and are already climbing the walls. Alistair Buchan writes in his (excellent) book Sailing an Atlantic circuit "Be warned, membership of the bluewater crusing tribe is for life.............".
He is so, so right. We are counting the days untill we can take the whole family back out there. There is nothing like it for a real sense of freedom.

Please take this kindly but if having someone look after your hot tub is that important then perhaps sailing away is not for you! I assume you are genuinely concerned over your assets that you have worked hard for and its not a wind up.

I think that its the lack of worry for your material possessions that is the best thing about sailing off. I appreciate you don't want to come back after say 3-4yrs and find the sale price of the house now only buys an outside toilet! House prices IMHO will always increase unless the government build more affordable houses for rent, there is a war or a mass epidemic that kills off the population! - its supply and demand. Be realistic try a sampler, if you enjoy accept that you will lose say 15% of the income and pay to have the house rented out and well managed in a good state of repair. Even more realistic accept that you will never move back into a house unless it has a complete makeover OR you sell on your return and buy elsewhere.

We took 3 months off in 2004 and sailed down to Spain and frankly we found that the arriving and mouching round was great but the sailing was not (it was a crap year for weather!). I decided that spending days at sea getting there was no fun especially when beating. I did love the freedom, the cycling round new places and we were luckily not on a restricted budget. I was suprised that you can buy crap food at some of the French resorts going South! Long term sailing is therefore not for us but if you think you would like it give it a try it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

At present the idea of taking a few months off each year and going South is attractive but we will see!

In the process of doing the same here. House has 3 offers at the moment, boat offer in later this week. Last teenager joins RN in September. Currently plotting moving the boat to safe winter haven, and getting VERY apprehensive now.

It is not as simple as that. If I leave it and it breaks it will be up to me to have it repaired remotely and that would not be cheap. Like boats, if I do it myself then it could be up to 1/4 of the cost or less. It it the same as the washing machine, tumble drier etc etc. All of which I intend to leave; being the landlord I will be responsible for their maintenance, but average white goods do not have to go to the manufacturer with manufacturer type costs.

My mum is itching to take the tub, but it involves taking the conservatory down and it would take value off the house if I do sell.

Do you see? It is not a case of leaving it behind, it is a case of leaving a headache behind..
