Being as I'm heading down channel for the summer cruise. Is there any danger of dropping off the edge of the world?
If so is it clearly marked?

At 13.30 we should be hearing an eminent UK politician confirming that the world is indeed flat.

I haven't found the edge yet but have heard rumours from local fishermen that it exists. You do however have to be very careful of the sea monsters that regularly immobilise boats. They hear the sound of the boat and then surface feet first. they are identifiable by having pink spherical endings to the tentacles which are very often dirty. The weaker monsters are unable to swim against any tide and so cannot get their tenatacles above water- some say these weaker specimens are the most dangerous. Take care.

Yes, apparently the JIC prepared the makings of a dossier which concluded that the world could be mathematically defined as an oblate spheroid. It was pointed out, however, that a line from any point on it's curved surface to any other point one fifteenth of a degree of arc away, could be said to be straight when viewed from a finite viewpoint.

Therfore the fact that the straight line could exist meant that it must exclude the possibility of curves.

no, you're quite safe down here, the 'tourist season' is not like the 'pheasant season'. you may be fleeced but you won't be shot.

That depends on firing ranges and submarines - don't be so sure

The Plymouth one frit us one time some years back, we heard the gunfire (BIG gun) and then saw a raft target just 300yds offshore of us! They were actually firing at another target (or were lousy shots) but frightening nonetheless. A Dutch boat nearby also saw a frigate flashing a signal lamp (he thought at him but it wasn't), closely followed by the big gun going off, he was calling on 16 asking why they were flashing him, he thought maybe they were firing a shot over his bows!

Blimey! I only remember 'ze Germans' as potential enemies.... At warwith the Scillies????? No way, it's on top of the list for most intermediate-long-distance sailors, along with the Channel Islands....
Both the Dutch history and Geography lessons tell us that the West is nearer to the edge of the world than the East. Hence Abel Tasman sailing all the way east to find his beautiful bounty-look-alike island. Probably the same reason Peter Stuyvisant sold New Amsterdam. He must have known that silly country must drop of the edge in the nearby future.......

oh shoot.. we were at war!

Funny story, I never knew and just learned something today (tell your other halve that boaty forums do privide vital information).

About 1650, the Scillies were the main location for many pirates, who were hurting the Dutch fleet. The Dutch admiral Maarten Tromp was sent out to stop this nonsence. With a dozen ships he headed out to the Scillies, had a serious conversation with the local leader and demanded returnal of certain Dutch ships. The pirates agreed upond this, putting an end to the war so Maarten could return home. The whole silly (Scilly??) situation was long forgotten, until after 3 centuries a piece of paper was found in the archives mentioning the conflict. Excluded from the archives were official endings of the situation..... Contact was made with the Dutch ambassy in London, piece offers made and signed. On the 17th of April 1986, after 335 jaar, the 'war' between Holland and the Scilly Islnads came to an official end!
