Got stuck in Brunsbuttel for two days, bringing a boat from Sweden. With a SW or W wind blowing in the river the seas there are short steep and dnagerous. What the pilot does not say is that in the spring the melt water from the mountains make the ebb run even stronger.

Still Brunsbuttel is a nice little town if you have the time

Approaching Cuxhaven we measured 4 knots of ebb tide in July last year, at the very bottom of neaps. Against a NW 5 this created an evil sea. We were taking green waves over the bow and into the cockpit, first time ever in my experience.

Agree about Brunsbuttel, nice little place. Quaint marina, too, complete with drinking club on the road alongside. Never seemed to cause any trouble, though. Mostly seemed sufficient challenge to walk and stand. Cuxhaven not bad, too, although food shops seemed to be quite rare near to the town marina. Yacht Club marina even more so.

Coming out of Cuxhaven in April on top of a Spring tide we were logging six knots through the water, and 11 - 12 knots over the ground by GPS. Fortunately it was a flat calm, but in any strength of onshore wind it would have been nightmarish - all 25 miles of it to clear the Scharhorn banks. Even the Harwich Ferry coming in arrived 40 minutes late pushing against the ebb, although it had been on time at the fairway.
