Have spotted a cruising chute second hand that I quite fancy as I can use it short handed. Any idea how big/small it should be compared with size of No.1 Genoa ??

Take a piece of cord, attach it to to your spinnaker halyard and raise it to top. Measure from the bow fitting and subtract 2 feet. That will give you a luff measurement.
In theory the rest should follow, as the dimensions ought to be similar. Some Cruising Chutes are high cut to the clew to allow better visibility, and will be cut much fuller than your Genoa. At a guess you are looking at about 165% in Genoa terms. Total square area will be as much as 85% of the equivalent Spinnaker size for your boat.

The cruising cute can be any size from area of genoa up wards. There will always be times when it is too small and others when it is too big.
Fullcircle is right you don't want it too tall although I think it is bad to have a chute too short. Some small boats have a very wide chute to get max area and a wide chute too short will swing from side to side if it is on a long halyard. ie it needs to be right up to the mast at the top.

As Fullcircle says, except the luff should not be tight, so you can set a chute where the luff tape measurement is say 5-8% more than the straight line. It wants to be above the pulpit (hence the subtract 2ft), unless you're going to set it outside on a mini-bowsprit!
