Do come back and post about your experiences. We can all learn from a fresh pair of eyes especially what is the most relevant points to brief newbes on wrt X channel.

What a weekend.
Slipped at 11.15pm on Friday evening and motored all the way to arrive Cherbourg 13.15 Sat.
Chose the port cabin and didn't sleep due to engine noise and spent all night up top. Why sleep when you can take part:cool:
Messed around in C'bourg and had a shower; lesson here, be very skinny.
Slipped at 8pm and motored until about 5am when it looked like we could sail so I got about 3 hours sleep and woke at 7.45 to;
Boat at about 60 degrees on a s'board tack in a 12 kt wind doing about 5 kts. Beautiful clear sunny morning, fresh clear and exilerating. Arrive needles at 11 am and motored to Hamble at 13.30
Note to self (and others)
Not possible to see and assess other boats at night too early
Nearest do not neccesarily present the most threat
Don't do anything until someone has decided the best way to do something (see How many skippers)
Take more care when going from one chart to another - a change of scale can do yer 'ed in:eek:
Whatever clothing you take, at 2 in the morning, I will be cold (on watch)
How ever much you motor, if you finish sailing, it will be worth it
Make sure I understand where the stringy things go, e.g. If the blue fleck starts in the 1st l/h jammer and ends up in the 3rd L/h jammer at the base of the mast, something's going to get interesting later:confused:

Absolutely .. we came back from Cherbourg on Sat, arriving back in Portsmouth at c23:00,

I started shivering badly the last hour despite wearing thermals, a fleece and a windproof. I had'nt taken my oilies with me cos the weather forecast was so good!

Great to read that you had a good trip and come back with your own tips.

I had to read this a couple of times to get what you meant:

How ever much you motor, if you finish sailing, it will be worth it

I thought you meant it was worth motoring to finish sailing which seemed a bit stern about stem !! I now realise you had a similar crossing to us from Ostende to Harwich..... 10 hours of motoring followed by 1.5 hours of great sailing on a slight sea made the whole weekend more enjoyable.

For future reference, a couple of comments on previous posts-

I find an iPod a good way to ward off the 3am boredom on watch but some skippers object to them saying you can't keep a proper watch if your hearing is impaired.

ATMs are a good way to get cash almost anywhere in the world but you need to carry the right card. A Nationwide debit card is probably the best.

I have found a good way to keep warm on a night watch is a sleeping bag pulled up to the armpits - as long as your cockpit is dry.
