Some months ago I had a rant on the liveaboard forum regarding the dumb footwear, Crocs. I did try and tell you what utterly stupid garments they are but many of you didn't listen, some of you got really angry (it was just a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun). And, as if in defiance, that normally respectable gentleman Mr T. Cunliffe appeared in Yachting Monthly a month later wearing the craziest pair of fluorescent orange Crocs ever invented, seriously tarnishing his reputation as an able seaman. Pictured ascending the mast, never has a grown man looked so utterly ridiculous ;)

Anyway, here's an update: in the last couple of months TWO people in Marmaris Yacht Marina have been hobbling around on crutches due to Croc-related accidents. One victim actually broke her leg and has been in a cast for the last few months. Both are taking part in the Vasco Da Gama rally to India, so these injuries have seriously hampered someone's cruising plans.

I've told you before and I'll tell you again: Crocs are the most stupid fashion garment since leg-warmers. Wear them at your peril. Better still, don't wear them at all :p

I don't normally give two hoots what people wear but i'll go with the Crocs one.

They look like the things 5 year olds play on the beach in.

And yep. They look flippin ridiculous.

We all had crocs when we lived aboard in the US

Best footwear ever for living on a boat in a warm climate, comfortable as hell, able to go in and out of the water, good grip, no stubbed toes on board, inexpensive, non-sweaty...

And I don't give a toss what you think they look like so there :p:p:p

They are brilliant. They are the ONLY things I have found that allow me to walk normally, don't know why. Otherwise I am crippled by 'false gout' resulting from diuretics. It may be false but the problems it causes are real. Crocs have completely cured it! I can't see the logic of their design, but they work.

Also good on boat, non marking, good grip, stand on shakles without pain, When wet they are slippery, but so is everything else if it does not fit.

I'm definitely a vote for (drab coloured) crocs! Got them on now - of course.

Don't know warm climate but they are good and like others I have a pair on at the moment indoors !!

I would also like to know how they are dangerous.

I'm glad you mentioned drab coloured ones though...

SWMBO bought hers years ago when they first came out and were recommended by some friends who run a charter boat in the Caribbean. I resisted very well for several years.

I now own 4 pairs. I have black ones, sand coloured ones, fluorescent pink ones (eat your heart out Mr Cunliffe, these are seriously BRIGHT) and a pair of very smart leather topped lace-up ones for best.

Oh and I have a friend who was in plaster for several months after jumping off his boat, wearing Dubarrys.

I always have a little smirk when I see grown men wearing these. They look like something worn by a two year old.

But then it is the same with white socks and sandals and sailing boots and shorts. Some people don't care what other people think but they do provide some rather jolly street entertainment.

My name is John and I wear crocs.

Actually that's a lie. I wear fake $6 brown ones from Walmart.

My wife has real Crocs in the brightest electric pink you can imagine.

See you in the Indian Ocean Jamie, we should be coming up the other way in a year or so. ;)

So you don't like crocs - we get the message

I wonder how many sensible-shoe incidents there were in the same period?

I like crocs. I believe they are about as safe as many alternatives and certainly safer than the filp-flops I often wear, but actually I don't care much. My mum used to strongly advocate sensible shoes, but she died some years back. Now I believe I am old enough to wear silly and dangerous shoes if I choose to, and I am going to.
