A friends son, age 20, is seeking work aboard yachts in the Med. He has "STCW 95 , powerboat2 , Eng 1 and lots of tender and sailing experience and raced at Cowes etc this year too". Any suggestions where he might look?

Wrong time of year really to pick up crewing positions in The Med. However, best bet is undoubtedly Antibes. Number of crewing agencies there. Also some cheap crew lodgings. Unfortunately, the days of walking along the docks looking for work have long gone !
Good luck to him, it's how i started, without the STCW 95 though !

What STCW'95 tickets has he got?

It was a five day course at UKSA - summary below:

STCW Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1)
STCW Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (STCW A-VI/1-2)
STCW Elementary First Aid (STCW A-VI/1-3)
STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (STCW A-VI/1-4)
Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW code Reg A-VI/6-1)

Only five days? The basic Fire Fighting used to be three days alone, five days for the advanced.
It's good that super yachts now require some training. Are these yacht specific? The reason I ask is that if he wants a job at sea the STCW tickets should help him get a job on a merchant vessel such as an oil boat etc as a junior deckhand until the yachts pick up again in the summer.

Maybe still time to whip down to the canaries for the start of the ARC. Always a few people looking for last minute crew.

I got the impression that the guy is looking for paid work, but he could, so to speak, work his passage to the Caribbean by crewing on an ARC boat, but he would need to ensure beforehand that there was a chance of a job in that area when he got there.

Bank roll him for a week in Palma now and he should send you a post card from Antigua by Christmas. Just get his 2 page CV looking the business first.
