Back to what I said, route already in plotter choice, one of many, get the forecast by 3G/4G,or shanks mare to the Marina office,
Alternative port also in plotter, switch route if conditions dictate, keep a log book(maybe I omitted to say this?)but record events as usual, after they occur?add, adequately trained crew for the requirements of the passage. An Amel 54 might be crewed by 2,an X 50 by 6, for the same passage.
Greater the distance from prompt help the more"if not duffers, won't drown"
Value the freedom given us by being as responsible as we can,and by prudent evaluation of the risks extant and projected along the voyage.

Captsensible, do you actually read other people's posts?

Clearly, the answer to your question is yes. Your kind quotes prove that, thank you.

We could have sailed to Ceuta from Gib today without a written passage plan, but being seaman like and sensible, we made a suitable one.

We also told someone ashore our eta and let them know we had arrived safely.

If an incident had occurred on the way, the plan would absolutely have stood scrutiny by an insurance company or MAIB in the very unlikely event of being necessary.

Clear your yardarm!

You are, of course free to sail as you see fit.

Bon voyage and fair winds.

Well on Sunday I set off from Cowes, all the way across the Solent Ocean to Portsmouth. I checked the state of the tide on arrival at the marina and the direction of the wind from my windex. I had heard the weather forecast for the next few days earlier on the radio and I was satisfied my vessel and crew were adequate for such a trip. My daughter was aware of our plans, indeed she was meeting us there and could notify the relevant authorities in the event that we did not arrive. Not once was I tempted to keep any contemporaneous note of this epic voyage and I am not only confident that I was fully compliant with SOLAS V but also that my actions would absolutely have stood scrutiny by an insurance company or MAIB in the very unlikely event of it being necessary too...;)

Unfortunately as the Solent waters are unclassified, none of this applies to your trip - but keep up the good work :)

It is to your credit that you complied with SOLAS5. Well done.
