Got a slight problem with a saab 10 model GG 78 in a 18ft plymouth pilot. On routine maintenance i discovered a hairline crack in the cylinder head which had been repaired & painted over, the only problem is that it has opened up slightly. I have been advised by the wize old owls in the harbour to grind a V all the way up the crack & fill with metal weld, plastic metal, or similar. Would this be okay? the boat is being used & i dont want to take her out of the water untill the end of sept. We never use full revs & apart from this the engine is fine.

The Sabb 10 is the most tolerant of engines - the only one I know of where the handbook states that you can run it at 25% power without any cooling water and where you can pump out the lube oil by running the engine until no more comes out! I would certainly have a go as suggested until you can do as I did and pick up a second hand head.
