CQR anchor - how to tell if "genuine"?

I have read somewhere that "genuine" CQRs have been made by various firms at different times.

I know that Lewmar is the current maker maker of the real thing but I am interested in buying a used one that was made by Sowester. Would that also be genuine or one of the many b4stard copies?

ps This is all I want to know. I am not seeking to start another tedious "my anchor is better than your anchor thread".

Gen CQRs are always full Lb weights ie 15 lb & "Made in Scotland" stamped in the shank
cast copies were always 1/2 lb lighter ie 14 1/2 lb

Some were made in Canada too.

The South African CQR's have a bad reputation for holding.

I believe they are all drop forged too .... at east my 75lb'er is. There can also be a difference in the hinge. The Lewmar CQR's have the pins on the plough side.

This isn't much help I'm afraid.

Look for the lead weighting at the tip.Some cheapo's don't have it or if the anchor was re-galvanised, it could have melted away.

I'm sure the originals didn't have lead. I remember an article where an owner complained to simpson lawrence or whoever, that the galvaniser had melted his lead, and SL came back looking for details of the anchor as it had to be a fake.

I have been sailing since CQR was the best you could get and I remember that way back then you could buy a 'Sowester' copy for about half the price of a Simpson Lawrence one. I think the difference was between casting and drop forging, though to be honest I could not explain what that means.

Forging is much stronger, hence why the cast CQR's got a bad reputation, rightly so.
