I feel I ought to ask this in a whisper hoping only a few people will hear. I have just joined a sailing club and a forthcoming event asks for attendees to come in Cowes rig. Not being a club man I have no idea what this is, can I have discrete answers please? The forum equivalent of a plain brown paper wrapped parcel!

Ignore the wannabe funny men's replies; the correct answer is: navy blue reefer or blazer, white shirt, club or similar tie, grey/navy blue slacks and navy blue or brown shoes.

havent you noticed our love of unofficial uniforms? the yotties who go to the london boat show in oilies yachting caps and deck shoes. or the shooting types dressed in lovat green in the supermarket. the bikers who have to wear colour coded leathers matching their bikes, etc.

we recognise each other by these sort of give aways, along with accent, the way we eat, the car we drive and a thousand otherways. the human equivalent of sniffing another dogs as***le

probably nobody will be rude if you turn up in the wrong gear, but they will all know you're not one of them. Long live Mrs Bucket!
