Cowes Rig dress code

As usual John I find myself pretty much in full agreement with you!

Our Golf Club certainly says no jeans, tee shirts or trainers in the main bar or on the course and must have proper golf spiked shoes on the course as well. Scruffier (member) oiks calling in for a quickie can use the Spikes Bar, as can those who cannot wait to change shoes to get the first pint down as they come off the course - or half way round!

Our Yacht Club (South Coast, own marina, 2,500 members, defaced Blue Ensign so well up in the chip on the shoulder man's lists) says 'No wet gear in the bar please'. That is because otherwise some of our less considerate members might just go straight in after dinghy racing in their muddy wetsuits. Oh it also says no dogs in the clubhouse and elsewhere they must be on a lead. Hear Hear to all of that!

It seems to me that much of the reverse snobbery about YCs is from those with vivid imaginations just looking to justify their own decision that a YC is not for them. Nothing wrong with not wanting to join, any more than there is in being a member. However if you go as a visitor or as a guest then you are using private facilities which are generally subsidised, cheaper food and drinks, maybe even cheaper visitor berths/moorings so why quibble about accepting that you don't turn up in the clubhouse for a meal looking like Gordon Brown at a black tie dinner or that you have just returned from a singlehanded circumnavigation in an Avon Redcrest?

Hear, hear - clubs are free to make their own rules and most are flexible and move with the times, so what was "the rule" 30 years ago will be moderated to-day. No point getting hot under the collar about clubs that do have dress codes - just don't join or expect to be a guest. Incidentally it's the collarless who seem to get hot, but what do they get hot under???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think I am breaking one of your club rules, the ships dog is lying down by my feet as I type and no leash in sight.

Look, I have no problem with a club rule that states smart clothes to be worn in the bar or dining room, but to stipulate what those clothes must be is draconian and creaking with old regimental we won the war haraph haraph bunkum.

Why not just have a tie rule than rules that make people look like w***ers dressed like colonel sanders to have a glass of wine. White trousers and dark jacket, I would not be seen dead dressed like that.

I will ask again, why do you need a uniform, why the need to all dress the same?

Fine by me and I love dogs BTW, just not the ones that crap on the pontoons or at the foot of the ladder when the boat is in the yard.

There goes the imagination again! We have no rules like that, all it says is please don't go in the bar in your wet gear. Considering we have outdoor showers to use for washing off wetsuits, wellies etc, then ultra modern shower and changing facilities not to mention srategicallly placed coathooks, it isn't too arduous to take off such is it?

As far as the bar and the restaurant is concerned there are no specific rules but then most people have some kind of personal pride and will dress reasonably but casually just as they would for a restaurant in town. I might add that for me that is pretty casual most of the time and a jacket and tie is certainly not needed, even for most of the cruising section dinners although some will. The annual dinner dance is 'black tie preferred', otherwise a suit is still OK, but then who but a few on the forums would want to attend in jeans and a Guiness tee shirt?

Do people still wear pink trousers? They used to be the yottie uniform in Cowes, along with yellow wellies, Javelin jacket and a Breton cap.

That wouldn't get you into the RYS, either!

I did go to a reception there one Cowes week in the seventies. I can't remember what we wore but I do recall coming out onto the street to see one of the crew of an Irish Admirals cup boat charge down the hill and headbut the wall. He bounced off, shook his head, said 'Boi Chroist, an Oirishman must have builded dat wall' then we all went back to his boat to party where he played splendid jazz trumpet for our entertainment.

Pink trousers yes...but I've not noticed yellow wellies since, er, I used to wear them in the 70s. Oh how I thought I was at the cutting edge of high fashion. Oh how I cringe at the memory.

[/ QUOTE ] /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif oh dear, what colour should ones wellies be these days?

Mine are cheapo navy blue Aigle shorties but the 'in-set' I believe wear leather boots these days. Even if you sail a little old £2,000 bilge keeler, the Southern Ocean set of wet gear and leather boots is essential I'm told, albeit they cost about the same as the boat... I have noticed that such extravagances are often seen amongst the crews of the race boats, the poor owners have other expenses to cover.

How much /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif , hmm think I will keep my yellow ones at least everyone will knwo who they belong to when I leave them in the cloakroom of the yacht club
