My yacht club specifies " Cowes Rig " as a semi formal dress code. I can't find out what this is, well not exactly. Everybody seems to have a different idea as to what it is. Any definitions out there?

Attend the first "cowes rig" function in Blazer and Club tie;
ater that you will have a good idea of whats what.

Boating Jacket (Blazer)
Whiteshirt
Club tie
Grey Flannels
Brown Shoes

In very hot weather, jackets, with the permission of Senior Flag Officer, may be removed but sleeves should not be rolled up, (Planters order).

Yacht owner's blazer buttons should be black, crew's brass or gilt.

My usual rig of Rohans, rugby shirt and deckshoes does not usually pass muster.

Judging by the contents of the High Street during Cowes week, it's:

Oakley sunglasses
Fat Face shorts.
T shirt bearing the legend "Yotties do it close-hauled"
Dubarrys

...and Club tie /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Deputy Dawg goes sailing!

On tenue de yachting, a sail tie does an admirable job when you've left a proper one at home.

All I can think of is - I'm glad I'm not a member! What pompous twaddle.

Graham, You'd be welcome in my club any time - and you can keep your hat on.

Do you think I would get in like this?

Well, RYS rules are:

Before 6pm: white trousers, white or blue shirt, black tie, club tiepin, blazer.

After 6pm: as above except blue trousers to match blazer.

It is just chinos and a dark jacket.
The shirt colour and tie design is up to you.

Those people who complain about having to look vaguely smart when visiting someone elses Yacht Club must be ignorant slobs. Stay in your virtual Yacht Clubs.

And for those of us who never ever wish to own a blazer?

Cripes this thread is depressing.

What is it about old blokes and uniformity?

Going back years, so may be out of date- but I think not.

Sames as " No. 1's" which we always carried when a shindig was due at the end.

Blue blazer, cream or white slacks and yottie deck shoes. White shirt and boaty tie.

Suitably attired we then proceeded to make complete ar**holes of ourselves with too much drink, at which point the tie would come off to prevent identification- then since every other ar**hole was dressed the same we blended in just fine, giving the local constabulary an identification problem /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

PS. it's really naff to have new shoes!
