So Cowes Harbour Commission want boats to keep clear of a drone being operated to do filming and survey work around the harbour. Personally I think the drone should keep clear of any boats, after all which is more manoeuvrable? It is also much easier to predict what a boat is likely to do than a drone buzzing around as well. How far away are we expected to keep??? Perhaps it's a joke.

Is it actually to keep clear of the Operators Boat ? That would be the usual requirement ..

(I'm a Licenced Drone Operator - and if I was doing such - the information would be passed to relevant authority to request keeping clear of Operator Vehicle / platform and be AWARE of the drone in use).

That isn't what they have said in the LNTM as it does not mention the operator or a boat other than they are monitoring channel 69. It actually says to keep clear of the drone whilst it operates over water. I could understand being asked to keep clear of a survey boat.

OK ... it appears that survey work is underway and the 'drone' will be videoing / photographing specific areas. This could be low altitude and high to obtain required shots.
This would then have a possibility of interaction at or below mast heights as well as disruption to planned flight paths.
Drone flights have a limited power run time and therefore operator would be looking to minimise any downtime or interference in the planned paths.

Commercial Drone Operations in UK / EU / USA and many other countries require NAMs to be issued and also flight plan / location parameters be made available to interested parties. Regardless of the media stuff you read about idiot drone operators - Commercial Ops are strictly controlled.

The posting of the NtoM at least explains the reqt' - as I post here.

I like the fact that they are at least communicating. I love drones for their sensible uses; surveys, replacing helicopter shots, professional filming, search & rescue etc etc. I hate the buzzing annoying things when they are disturbing me, the wildlife and ruining my privacy. For the latter, which is better, catapult or air rifle?

I saw a drone model fitted with a high tech "goop" gun at the science museum - designed for very quick & cheap emergency repairs of buildings.

As it is doing survey work it will be following a set 'flight path' in order to cover the survey area. I suspect the drone pilot will get just a 'tat tetchy' if s/he need to return to the start of the flight path every few minutes.

In my experience of Cowes harbour I am not sure I can predict what any vessel will do.

Which I understand would be treated by the relevant authorities the same as shooting at any other aircraft, which at last count was pretty severely!
Of course, I wouldn't actually do it! I have neither bits of equipment. However, if one hits a rock or downs it in the sea terminally, I would find it hard not to chuckle.

However, those twits buzzing around, disturbing the peace, hassling the wildlife and taking pictures of you in yer smalls are really annoying.

The statement you made there is one on the myths about drones ............ unfortunately it gets rolled out again and again by those who have no idea what the drone can actually do.

To get any shot of 'you in your smalls' would be a joke as the drone would have to so low that it would then be a) unsafe b) intrusive. The height usually flown low and high is hardly capable of having person identifiable let along see any 'bits' !!

Second - Privacy is actually not a right unless invasion of decency involved. Drones are free to fly over private property same as any other aircraft - subject to Flight Rules and Air Traffic Control Regs.

Strange, I haven't had any 747s buzzing around close to me recently .... :)

Although, they really don't always seem to follow this ....

"If you fly your drone low over someone’s land without their permission, you could be liable in trespass, even if you do not personally go onto the land (although this is generally a civil rather than a criminal matter)."

Still, I don't have to care about the legal details, I find them bloomin' annoying - you've just got to the peaceful anchorage, natural headland or even historic town area and - bzzzzzzzzzzzzz- these stupid things are flying around. And don't take pictures of me or my boat, I don't like it.

And then there is the disturbance to wildlife
Fears over protected wildlife disturbed by drones
Drones are harassing nesting birds on the Oregon Coast. There's a plan to stop them.
Vidiot: Drone pilot provokes protected seals to stampede before filming self, then uploads
After California tern egg disaster, Oregon moves to protect nesting birds from drone harassment

Even the seagulls in Ocean Village are clearly disturbed when the drones start up.

As I have said before, I support all the sensible, considered & controlled uses of drones, but the rest of 'em are annoying.

MDL so seem to like using them but they're still rather less disturbing than HarBar blaring away.

Do you have a Strimmer ? I hate those on a sunday afternoon .... out there enjoying the day and somewhere someone's running a strimmer .....

As to pictures of you or your boat ... why would anyone centre on your boat / you ? Most likely is that your boat is in a group or marina and its the overall shot .... which you can bitch about as much as you like - but is fully allowed. I agree that even I as a Drone operator do not like unnecessary pictures of me or my property - but apart from asking the taker politely to not do it - there's naff all you can do about it.
My pet hate though is people in Airports snapping photos close up which has you identifiable in .... I have often asked takers to not include me ... if they don't agree - I turn face away ... (I have in the past had very good reason to not be photo'd travelling - but that's another matter).
