Hi all
i think the mother bd battery needs changing as i am loosing various settings, mouse buttons, processor speed. to name 2
question?
1/ can i remove the battery with pc off without loosing stored data.
2/ should i leave pc on & remove battery.
i cant read the battery details / spec/ ref Nos in-situ

the battery on the board should only be holding bios values while computer is switched off (e.g. time and date, password etc) These will be wrong when you switch on again (bios password defaults to switched off) - When the computer is running it should not have any additional effect so there may well be a different problem. Processor speed could be merely a very fragmented /overfull hard drive.

When PC is switched off, it should be possible to remove battery on most boards (but some are actually soldered on) If the battery is already dead, it wont make any difference. If it is still working, the bios defaults will need to be customised again.

If you are loosing mouse buttons, it is unlikely to be just the motherboard battery.

the date setting is a problem the processor is an Athlon xp1700 & defaults to 1100mhz & times & boot-up .
i then have to change bios settings.
battery is in a holder not soldered
the pc is 4 yrs old ( quite ancient really )

sorry I was off having something to eat, glad boatless has solved the problem.. presumably from your 2nd post it was just the battery on the board.

assume so .
wipped the ole battery out, got the code (CR2032) temp re-installed it.
plan to get replacement 2 morrow.
my only concern in removing it was loss of data

If you do it quickly the data is still retained. It takes some time for the CMOS to discharge and lose the info.
