Does any forumites know where I can hire or borrow a diesel engine compression tester with a suitable adapter for my Volvo 2040 in the South West area? I have tried a couple of Hire Shops in Plymouth without success. One local factor says he can source one for £120 but it will take two weeks to arrive. The local Volvo agent suggested a mornings work at £40 plus per hour plus VAT - which will be just short of £200 sir.

I thought - borrow or hire one and do it myself - but I need to get hold of the tester first!

I had the compression on my 2003 checked a few years ago by a Volvo Penta engineer and, as I recall, it didn't seem a terribly precise process. Importantly, it only takes a few minutes to do the actual test, although there's a fair bit of dismantling and reassembling to do - which is why you've been quoted a morning's work. If you want to save cash, ask the VP agent whether they'll just pop along and check the compression if you do the required dismantling/reassembling.

I wouldn't bother trying to get hold of a gauge and doing it yourself - you really need someone who knows what they expect to see on the gauge.

It doesn't really matter what the reading is as long as each cylinder is similar.
Gauges differ and valve overlap, cranking speed and throttle position all effect the reading.
For these reasons (in petrol mode, much lower compressions) I've seen full race engines with only 120psi and 'cooking' Fiat Uno engines with 180psi.
