Any idea what is this compass and where to find suitable plastic cover(2)?
Looks similar to contest 101 and mini-contest.

Looks very like the Suunto compass on my boat. If you can give me the dia etc I will attempt to confirm. Also think that there is a compass leaflet onboard regarding the manufacturer.

150 mm.
No paper work on board. Also quite sure, that a couple of years ago there was an old sticker on it 'Plastimo', but I can't find the same.

Looks like the Plastimo Contest 64.94.00.3.

I have an old instruction manual which lists:
Plastimo Manufacturing UK
School Lane
Chandlers Ford Ind Estate
Eastleigh
Hants
SO5 3NB

Tel 04215 62211

Don't know if they're still there.

I'm sure it's a Plastimo Contest 100 (not 101). £7.95 from Force4.

Generally last about 5 years.

You would have thought a UV cover would be made of UV stable plastic. I gave up and made a canvas cover. Should get out more I know.

PS: Definitely a Contest 100. Ours is the same.

I agree. That's a great bit of canvas work. Only problem I can see is getting the drawstring to hold on the very narrow rim. Did you incorporate something like a thin strip of flexible plastic to create some friction?

Others have reported covering the compass in clingfilm and moulding fibreglass covers .... but seems a bit extreme to me.

Although I don't have the details to hand, it looks just like the Plastimo compass (original) on our Westerly Fulmar. I've tried over the years to find a replacement cover but without success. I was told (by, I think, the manufacturers or their distributors) that the covers are no longer available. The nearest I could find were a few mm too small in diameter.

We have tried various alternatives including a disposable aluminium pie tray which could be squeezed to mould around the compass. This seemed to work for a while but the problem was that the rim of the compass is too narrow to adequately secure it and we often found it in the bottom of the cockpit. Perhaps we should buy another pie and try again or, better still, make something in canvas similar to that made by Ruffles. There is still the problem of securing it but maybe a couple of screws around which a draw cord could be wrapped.

It's held on with a hope and a prayer. Though from memory there's a thin strip of sail bag material for the draw cord to coincide with the 'neck' on the compass. Drawcords don't work too well on canvas. It wouldn't have taken more than a few minutes to make; I have a very short boredom threshold. Never fallen off and it's a few years old.

It was originally a temporary measure because like the original poster I couldn't find a replacement plastic cover in the chandleries. If you do find one how about covering it with gaffer tape before it cracks. It might last forever!
