Can anyone who was out on the clyde around Largs yesterday (Sat 19.4.03) explain how the forecast could be so wrong it was given as 10mph from the East, the only thing correct was the direction I came into the marina around 6.00pm and the wind was touching 30knots about half a mile from the marina, I know about catabatic effects but try explaining that to my Wife and two kids.

which forecast were you talking about?
The local inshore forecast for the Clyde area, issued by the Met office at 0500 on Sat 19th April was.....

WIND: EAST OR NORTHEAST 4, INCREASING 5, PERHAPS 6 LATER.

I was out there and yup, sounds pretty accurate to me!! t'was a tad breezy, a steady 25 kts in the Skelmorlie channel and very gusty around Largs (some well into the 30's). Always is when an Easterly rattles down the Gogo valley and straight out through the marina!
If you don't manage to catch the MSI Broadcasts, feel free to call the Clyde Coastguard Ops room on CH16 or tel: 01475 729988

I chartered for my first time out of Largs last July. We had been moored in Millport overnight and left with I think a NE 2/3 forecast. As we left the bay the wind built very quickly and we put 2 reefs in. We had no wind instruments but another yacht that left Millport at the same time moored next to us that evening in Holy Loch. His instruments showed 6 gusting 7. Aparently this is a common local effect with the wind from that direction.
