I have a standalone clipper depth finder that has stopped working. It still has illumination and good 12v but just no display. It sometimes works briefly and then dies again. I'm thinking that with the transducer disconnected I should still have some kind of display right? Just trying to work out if the problem is the head unit or the transducer/cable

Ring Nasa instruments as they can be very helpfull. I would say the display should be on regardless of having the transducer plugged in.
Foxschandlery have the transducers for £40.

+1 for contacting NASA but doesn't quite sound like a transducer fault. More an intermittent fault. I should look at all your connections, make sure they are clean and good. If anything in the component side goes down it will normally stay down, stand fast dry joints!
