Cillit Bang black mould remover.

Last week - I soaked my sails in diluted bleach - at the same ratio as washing machine info .. to kill the mould ... then good rinse in the bath !!

Laid out in my workshop to air ...

The stains were still there but 'dead' ..... it is possible to take a general cleaner and brsh some of it out - but back to rinsing again ...

Anything harsh enough to do the job cannot be left in the material

Any hope this might work on sails or oilies, without melting them?
I think you will find it contains sodium hypochlorite .
see Reckitt Benckiser Product Information Website

Be sure a chlorine bleach is safe for the items you use it on., .......... Generally not suitable for synthetic fabrics. Be very cautious about using on polyester sail cloth as it can, and sometimes does, turn it yellow irreversibly

My preference would be a benzalkonium chloride based product such as Polycell 3 in 1 Mould Killer or Patio Magic diluted 10 fold. ( Aldi often have a product the same as PM, but much cheaper)

Although the mould is relatively easily killed , and prevented by periodic use of benzalkonium chloride, the black spot are difficult to remove as said above . A peroxide based bleach such as Vanish Oxi-Action may help. (another range of Reckitt Benckiser products)

I have used peroxide bleach, in powder from ebay. It's basically Vanish. Kills the spores with confidence and will attack the stains. In my case they were not too heavy and are no longer visible.

I've used cillit black mould remover successfully on cockpit tent and spray hood black and green mould spots with no short or long term ill effects. Just dont leave on for long ( probably 10mins max) and rinse off thoroughly. Worked well for me when nothing else I tried did. I would therefore be prepared to give it a very careful go on a sail and oilies.

HG Mold remover spray, 500 ml , Lakeland and other outlets. 6.39 GBP. Wash it off, as soon as the mold has gone.
If in doubt, test on a spare bit o material .

I used it on a black spotted Oceanair blind, it worked well, left it on about 20 minutes if I remember & washed thoroughly afterwards. The fabric will no doubt have been weakened a little but it's fine. Oilies I'd have thought would need reproofing...

This topic brings up an interesting aspect of todays situation.

I've just been in a number of shops that would normally be stocked to the rafters with CILIT Bang and similar - especially the Mould and Hygiene cleaners ..... sold out ... shelves empty !!

Managed to find one shop that has Laundry 'Oxy Bleach' for mould and stain removal and a general household wall Mould remover ... the bottles were away in a corner .. had to search for them !!

CV19 having its day with these !! In fact its not such a bad idea ... door handles etc.

Just used the Laundry version on my Sprayhood - then gave it a good rinse job ... worked a treat ....

Once weather warms up and I start refitting gear / ropes to boat - will use a combo of the two bottles to attack some areas on the boat that need it ...

Debating whether to down the mast before boat back in use ... all halyards / sails are off at present making it a lighter proposition ... even considering lifting her out ... check out underneath then week or so later put her back in ...

I bought a bottle of this from Ebay.
Did an excellent job of removing all the green mould from my blue boat canopies and even got rid of some old black staining left from previous attempts over the years.
Did use it at a higher concentration that recommended.
Brushed it on with a scrubbing brush to work solution into canvas ,left for 15 mins and then washed off again with help of scrubbing brush.
Pretty impressed.
It does suggest reproofing but nothing came through during some really heavy rain.
It also warns not to leave on to dry.
Priced well below anything with the words Marine or Boat on the bottle.

The Laundry and Wall cleaner I showed earlier also warn not to let dry ...

I tried finding patio / concrete cleaner as another posted on the forum - but cannot find over here ..... add that to my long list of items to bring back from UK once restrictions lifted ! Along with Custard Powder .. Gravy Granules .. Pork Pies .. Pasties .... English Sausages ... Leylandii bushes !!

Interesting addition to this subject ....

When removing my halyards ... I had to remove the webbing tie backs that stop the few external lines from banging on the mast ... I noticed a lot of grey - green build up on the main shroud below the webbing ... it appears that the mould on the webbing grew and started down the wire stay ...
Its actually quite hard to remove ... so my spray bottles will be active on that once weather warms up a bit !!

Bump! A few years ago I asked this forum how to get rid of black mould spots on my oilies. (The general consensus was to learn to love the spots! :cautious:) I can’t find my original thread, but came across this one whilst searching.

I was given a bottle of Cillit Bang Black mould remover and tried it on the hood of my jacket, nothing happened even with gentle scrubbing. I left & returned a couple of hours later to find the spots had vanished where I had sprayed! I’ve sprayed some more spots & taken photos around 45mins apart. It looks like the miracle cure I was hoping for!!! (y):D:D:D (The warnings earlier in this thread still apply)!

It's basically bleach in a fancy bottle.
