Once swam off a becalmed boat in several mile deep very clear water: just one fish in sight - one of the little striped jobs that accompany sharks. Slightly worrying - where's the shark? I'm sure it was just with the boat, but I didn't stay in the water long. I'm a rubbish swimmer anyway, but it was a very hot day.

What would put me off doing that even more than the risk of sharks would be the, to the best of my knowledge, true story of a carter crew that did that in the Med - everyone on board. The wind came back and none of them could swim as fast as the boat was drifting, even under bare poles...
