Chapman's Pool - ?shelter

Can someone give me the benefit of their experience - how tenable is Chapman's pool in southerly or ssw winds?

Keep well away! Obvious as it is open to the south. The bottom shelves steeply in the entrance and the ledges either side help send in swell if there is any wind.

Definitely a fair weather anchorage with good shelter from the north. However, like Lulworth just down the coast subject to strong Katabatic winds in the evenings.

Have never spent a night there, but an excellent stopover to wait out a tide, particularly mid-day low waters.

We've stayed there overnight and for sure there is some breeze overnight that comes down off the surrounding hills. We had a very unsettled night there and won't be rushing back. As for a breeze with S in it; I'd stay well away. You'd be better off at the W end of Worbarrow bay; you will get a little shelter from S wind behind the rocks at low tide. The best plan of course would be Studland; perfect shelter for S wind. Otherwise tucked in the S end off Weymouth beach maybe?

Morning,

just a couple of thoughts...

not really sensible to anchor in any bay with an onshore breeze...

And didn't i hear a rumour that they're trying to discourage folk from anchoring in Studland? We're killing all the Seahorses...

Never thought i'd hear myself say this, but i'm quite looking forward to coming back to work on the south coast...

Chapman's Pool

Read "Inshore Along The Dorset Coat" by Peter Bruce. This book will tell you that Chapman's pool is only a lunch stop. One of the best places to anchor overnight in southerly winds is to tuck in close behind Mupe Rocks in Worrbarrow Bay. Lulworth is untenable and can be very dangerous in strong southerly winds.
