Change reverse gear oil on cold engine?

Warm oil is less viscous, so flows much more easily. If it is removed by draining, it will drain much more completely if it is warm, As Plum says, if it has to be pumped out, its a whole lot easier with warm oil. Really cold engine oil can be quite difficult to suck out!

I can vouch for that, I made the mistake of vacuum pumping the gearbox oil cold, it took hours!

Might be affected by what type of oil. Heavy gear oil in my bow thruster (EP 90) takes ages to drain but will do so eventually whereas my gearbox takes ATF (red) and is OK to drain cold. I don't use suction for either. Warming the gearbox is never for the bow thruster and 30 mins plus for the gearbox which doesn't fit with when I need to do the jobs.

I changed my gearbox oil (ATF) cold the other day. 0.2 litres, via the Pela suction pump, came out quickly and easily, ATF is much thinner than engine oil.
